10 Spin-Off Movies In Development Hell That Need To Happen

For some, Captain Planet is a hokey do-gooder with a green mullet, but to fans, he’s a beloved environmental mascot that made recycling cool in the ’90s. With all the other superhero movies being made, why not promote one involving Earth’s protection by a group of multicultural kids and a nice guy in a fashion mullet?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie’s screenwriter Glen Powell has a much darker take in mind for Earth’s eco-friendly defender than the ’90s show. Powell claims that “ours is way more subversive and fun and like dark and irreverent. If you have a blue superhero with a green mullet, you can’t do like an earnest take on that.” Who wouldn’t want to see edgy Captain Planet?

The Aquaman Spin-Off About Black Manta

James Wan stepped away from the horror genre to make the popular blockbuster Aquaman, but he would have returned to his roots with The Trench, a horror spin-off about a tribe of beings who survived after Atlantis disappeared and adapted to life near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. At one point, Black Manta steals the Dead King’s Scepter and the tribe views him as their leader.

According to Wan, the canceled Aquaman spin-off was really a secret Black Manta movie about the mysterious mercenary starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The actor is still expected to have a larger role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which has been in development hell of its own. A Black Manta movie would not only have delighted his fans but explored a darker, grittier side of the Aquaman franchise.

The Walking Dead Spin-Off About Rick Grimes

There have been rumors of fan-favorite Rick Grimes appearing in a series of spin-off movies of The Walking Dead for years, and a recent episode of The Walking Dead: World Beyond gave fans hope that eventually, they’d find out what happened to Grimes after his sudden helicopter disappearance.

There are still a lot of The Walking Dead characters who could appear in the Rick Grimes movies, but interest has waned so much that fans may not even care who finally makes it into the stories if they’re not filmed soon.

The Batman Returns Spin-Off About Catwoman

Michelle Pfeiffer brought one of Batman’s most fascinating villains to life in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, vacillating between demure and deranged, and somehow bringing heart-aching sincerity to a part that could have been reduced to a caricature. So good was her performance, in fact, that she nearly got her own spin-off movie.

While it’s true that fans did get to see Halle Barry wear the ears in the Catwoman from 2004, it wasn’t the same; fans wanted to know if Pfeiffer’s Catwoman ever got to live in Batman’s castle “like a fairytale.” If Keaton can come back for Batgirl, Pfeiffer can return as Catwoman, a little older, a little wiser, a lot more fierce.

The Justice League Spin-Off About The Flash

After the moderate success of Justice League and Wonder Woman’s spin-off movies, it seemed like a spin-off movie about The Flash was a given. Fans have been waiting since 2018 and yet still haven’t seen Barry Allen in his own independent adventure, and the stand-alone movie has already lost a director in that time.

There are a lot of things fans want to see in The Flash movie, including a respectable adaptation of the Flashpoint storyline, but given how long it’s been since Justice League came out (even the Snyder cut), and the recent negative media attention of Ezra Miller, they may have a lot longer to wait.

The Empire Strikes Back-Era Spin-Off About Boba Fett

Fans clamoring to know what happened to the galaxy’s most infamous bounty hunter after Return of the Jedi were finally treated to Fett getting his own series on Disney+, but while some things worked in The Book of Boba Fett, the redemption-fueled storyline didn’t sit well with those expecting to see him as a stone-cold killing machine.

Even as far back as 2013, Entertainment Weekly reported a Boba Fett movie was being discussed to take place “either between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, or between Empire and Jedi, where the bounty hunter was last seen plunging unceremoniously into a Sarlacc pit.” If a movie was ever made in that time period, Fett could keep his helmet on and maintain his brutal persona, giving disgruntled fans what they want.

The Die Another Day Spin-Off About Bond Girl Jinx

Die Another Day was the last outing for Pierce Brosnan as James Bond before Daniel Craig took the title of 007, and along for the icy ride was Halle Barry as Jinx, a highly-trained femme fatale that according to Empire was supposed to get her own spin-off movie. And why not? “Bond girls” are as much a draw for the franchise as Bond himself.

Barry might get another spin-off realized in the John Wick universe thanks to her scene-stealing turn as Sofia, a former assassin in Wick’s cohort that debuted in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, but if that doesn’t happen, let a Bond girl finally get her own movie.

The Star Wars Spin-Off About Luke & Leia’s Adventures

Some spin-offs of the Skywalker saga have done well, like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and some have done poorly, like Solo: A Star Wars Story, but even if they’re divisive among the community, Star Wars fans still love going on adventures in that galaxy far, far away however they happen. Back when Star Wars: A New Hope debuted, Alan Dean Foster was recruited by creator George Lucas to conceive of a follow-up novel that could be filmed on a low-budget depending on his space opera’s success.

It featured Luke and Leia crash landing on a mysterious planet, searching for kyber crystals, and even battling Darth Vader. Star Wars was wildly successful, and Lucas made a bigger, bolder sequel, but don’t fans deserve to see a young Leia begin her Jedi training and wield a lightsaber against the Dark Lord of the Sith?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Spin-Off About Gambit

X-Men Origins: Wolverine wasn’t generally well-received when it debuted, but fans were certainly excited to finally see the Crazy Cajun Gambit on the big screen. Unfortunately, nothing became of Taylor Kitsch’s Creole thief after the movie faded into obscurity – not even the proposed Gambit spin-off.

Deadpool got to have his own movie series, but not even having Channing Tatum attached to the role helped a Gambit film finally enter into production, though CBR seems to think Disney+ could save the forgotten X-Men spin-off. Longtime fans deserve to see a Gambit movie, one way or another.

High Republic Yoda Spin-Off Movie

Even with the presence of Grogu in The Mandalorian, fans still aren’t any closer to learning the origins of Yoda, the first of his long-eared species to be seen in the Star Wars Universe. Yoda comes from an incredibly long-lived species and led the Jedi Council on Coruscant for many years, but nothing is known about his early days as a Jedi Knight.

Even in 2017, The Hollywood Reporter was discussing a Yoda spin-off movie, with the possibility of it being centered on the Jedi Master when he was young (about 500 years old, in fact). Given the success of the Star Wars novels set during the High Republic era, there’s a chance that fans might finally get a Yoda movie set during a period of time when he was building his legendary reputation.
