Apple’s Self Service Repair Is Now Available in the US

US customers can purchase official components for domestic patches

Apple’s self-service repair program has officially launched in the United States, allowing customers to order official repair tools, parts and manuals.

We’ve known since 2021 that Apple is working on a self-service repair program, but so far it’s only planned for “early 2022.” It looks like Apple has decided the time is right, as it announced the launch of the program for US customers.

According to Apple, Self-Service Repair will provide those who can perform home electronics maintenance with hundreds of official parts and tools to repair their iPhone 12 or 13. Silicon Macs will be added later this year, but no timeline was given.

The first step is to consult the repair manual for the device you want to repair. Then, once you’ve determined what you need, you can order the necessary parts and tools directly from Apple. If you don’t want to purchase the tools directly, rental car kits are available for $49. When the repair is complete, you can return the old parts for recycling; this may require you to issue Apple credit based on the returned component.

Apple claims that the parts offered in its self-service repair program are “the same – at the same price – as those found in Apple’s authorized repair network. It also states that the tools available are the same tools used by Apple’s official repair network partners.

Self-service repair is currently available to US customers and will expand to other (but unspecified) countries later this year, starting with parts of Europe. However, Apple recommends that you only try at-home repair if you’ve repaired electronics before.
