Bats are the kings and queens of the night sky (especially in the fall).

Because they’re so closely tied to Halloween (eek vampires!!!), we think this easy bat silhouette art is a great project to do with the kids this Halloween season.

It’s also a great class project – you could even make it a group project to create a cute Halloween bulletin board (awesome, huh)?

We think orange tones work great for this, but you could also use the background in another color.

How to Make Bat Silhouette Halloween Art

What do you need:

  • white card stock
  • black card stock
  • the scissors
  • felt pen
  • sponge brush
  • paints
  • optional – washi tape

step by step tutorial

Fold a piece of white paper in half (or fold it anywhere).

Draw two bat “halves” – we have a tutorial on how to draw a bat that you may find useful for drawing wings.

Cut along the drawn lines to get bat silhouettes.

Prepare your paints – we used white, yellow and orange in our project.

Place the bat silhouette on black paper.

If you are working with younger children, secure the bats by making a roll of washi tape and tape it to the bat – press the bat to the black paper – the washi tape will hold it in place and be easy to remove later.

Dip the sponge brush into the colors and start applying it to all the bat cuts.

Add more dye until you are happy with the density and spread of the dye.
