Battlefield 2042’s 128-Player Breakthrough Mode Has Been Removed
The 4.1 update for Battlefield 2042 recently went live across all platforms, notably paring down the 128-player Breakthrough playlist to 64 players. In the lead up to launch, Electronic Arts and developer DICE billed Battlefield 2042’s 128-player Breakthrough mode as one of the military shooter’s most defining experiences. The massive player count significantly increased the chaos of warfare, forcing users to constantly stay on guard during matches in the attack-and-defend mode. Like several other aspects of Battlefield 2042, however, this version of Breakthrough boasted a few too many flaws as far as some players were concerned.

Issues related to lag proved particularly troublesome early on, with many attributing the problem to Breakthrough’s 128-player count on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series platforms. Many also argued the doubled player count caused far too much chaos, reducing the effects of tactical gameplay that Breakthrough often demanded. Several months after Battlefield 2042’s disastrous launch and it now seems as though DICE agrees with the general consensus regarding the popular game mode.
In a post via the Battlefield Direct Communication Twitter page, DICE revealed that All-Out Warfare’s Breakthrough playlist has undergone one major change in Update 4.1. The new patch has reduced the 128-player count to 64, a move that should make way for a “more tactical experience,” DICE noted in a blog post on Battlefield’s Electronic Arts webpage. “Reducing our player count here helps to remove some of the chaos,” the message reads in part before adding that squads in Breakthrough 64 should find teamwork much easier to manage. Such a change should also engender better overall pacing in terms of the moment-to-moment action, DICE continued.

Replies to the above social media suggest the latest changes to Battlefield 2042’s All-Out Warfare Breakthrough playlist has the community divided. While some think 64 users per match will make for a better experience, others say they preferred the chaos of 128 players on the battlefield at once. Only time will tell if DICE’s decision ultimately benefits or damages interest in the Breakthrough mode.
Of course, Battlefield 2042’s Update 4.1 unleashed a host of other adjustments, as well. The latest patch nerfs Boris’ SG-36 Sentry Gun, for example. Players should also notice a few improvements related to input lag, Aim Assist, and Vehicle Aim Sensitivity. Plus, improved base recoil should ensure that all stock weapons now feature better handling. It remains to be seen if ongoing fixes to the experience will turn the tide in Battlefield 2042‘s favor.
