Berserk Should Be Finished By the Real Person Who Inspired Griffith
Few manga have left the same impact as Berserk, so it’s only natural for fans to wonder whether it will ever get a proper conclusion. Though Berserk creator Kentaro Miura may have passed, that doesn’t necessarily mean the manga is over, and some fans believe the best person to finish the modern masterpiece is a friend of Miura who actually inspired series antagonist Griffith.
Ever since Miura’s passing in May of 2021, Berserk has been in a state of limbo. Miura had completed one chapter before his unexpected death and had the script completed for another. The chapter Miura himself completed was far from a conclusion but still was a fitting thematic end, showing Berserk protagonist Guts choosing hope over revenge. Unfortunately, the next chapter with art completed by Miura’s assistants was a massive cliffhanger that completely changed everything readers thought they knew about two key characters. Since then, Berserk’s publisher has been tight-lipped about the possibility of a continuation, refusing to comment one way or the other. If the series does continue though, it should be with the guidance of mangaka Kōji Mori.

In an interview with Berserk publisher Young Animal (published in English through Crunchyroll) celebrating the second anime series’ release, Miura revealed that his longtime friendship with fellow mangaka Kōji Mori was a direct inspiration for Griffith. Mori is also a seinen mangaka published in Young Animal who is most famous for manga such as Suicide Island and Holyland. Miura further revealed that the two actually coauthored a manga together in high school that was never officially published. The two would push each other to improve, leading to a friendly rivalry that Miura says formed the basis for Guts and Griffith.
Given the two’s close friendship and the similarly dark themes of their work, it’s no understatement to say that few mangaka would have a better insight into Miura’s mind than Mori. Assuming Miura never expressed any sentiment to the contrary, Mori teaming up with Miura’s assistants could finally give fans the ending they’ve waited for. Though there are plenty of fanworks and fan comics imagining Berserk’s ending, an official ending could not only give fans closure, it could serve as a heartwarming tribute to Miura from the people who knew him best.
Of course, all of that is making the assumptions that Miura would have wanted his masterpiece to continue after his passing and that Mori would want to be the one to finish it (along with Miura’s assistants). While it does seem like a distinct possibility at the moment, it’s still far from certain. Given that Berserk‘s publisher Young Animal still hasn’t commented one way or the other though, the door is open. Regardless of what happens, there’s no doubt that if anyone does finish Berserk, they’ll have large shoes to fill.
