One of the most powerful superheroes in the DC Universe, Superman has his share of equally powerful and dangerous villains – some of whom up their own game by joining the “Dark Army” that seems intent on killing the Justice League. He led the “Dark Crisis” event in Justice League #75 on April 26.

One of them, Doomsday, already has a Justice League kill – Superman himself in ‘Death of Superman’ in 1992’s Superman #75. In fact, Justice League #75’s ‘Death of the Justice League’ 2022 pays a direct tribute to this formative story for its 30th anniversary.

But Doomsday is just one of the best Superman villains of all time. Who else makes the cut? Keep reading to find out.

Like we said, Lex Luthor isn’t just Superman’s worst enemy, he’s one of the greatest supervillains in all of the DCU and, heck, comics.

Yet with Luthor, it all comes down to Superman. In all his incarnations – the corrupt businessman… the mad scientist… the megalomaniacal super villain and world conqueror… to his current role as protector of the Earth – his motivation is almost always the same: take down the man of steel, prove that Luthor is the best and that everyone else is below.

Regardless of Lex Luthor’s incarnation, there is a perfect dichotomy between Luthor and Superman. Superman represents an outside force that succeeds for the good of the world in which humanity has embraced things they could never have imagined. Luthor is humanity’s greatest potential, too selfish and arrogant to use his abilities to heal anyone but himself. There’s a subtle but brilliant dynamic between the two perspectives that makes Superman all the more powerful and Luthor all the more malevolent.

No Superman villain is as well known, loved, or traveled as Lex Luthor. Often considered the de facto leader of all DCU supervillains, he has been portrayed as such in too many incarnations to name, just as Superman is often considered the leader of DC’s pantheon of heroes.

Luthor’s latest plan will take him down a new path – in conflict with the Dark Knight, with whom he will attempt to play the role of Batman.

As we say, Lex Luthor isn’t just Superman’s greatest enemy, he’s one of the greatest supervillains of the entire DCU and heck, all of comic books.
Still, with Luthor, it all comes back to Superman. Throughout all his incarnations –  corrupt businessman … mad scientist … all-out, megalomaniacal, world-conquering supervillain … to his current-day role of Earth-protector – his motivation is almost always the same: take down the Man of Steel, prove that Luthor is the best and that all others are beneath him.
Whatever the incarnation of Lex Luthor, there’s a perfect dichotomy between Luthor and Superman. Superman represents an outside force, achieving things that humanity could never dream to accomplish, all for the good of his adopted world. Luthor is humanity’s greatest potential, too selfish and arrogant to use his gifts to better anyone but himself. There’s a subtle, but brilliant dynamic between the two viewpoints that makes Superman seem all the stronger, and Luthor seem all the more malevolent.
No Superman villain is as well known, as well-loved, or as well-traveled as Lex Luthor. Often seen as the de facto leader of all of the DCU’s supervillains, he’s been portrayed as such in too many incarnations to name, much like Superman is most often seen as the leader of DC’s pantheon of heroes.
Luthor’s latest scheme will take him on a new path – in conflict with the Dark Knight, where he’ll attempt to take over the role of Batman.
