Beyond Good & Evil 2 Still Happening & Aiming High, Ubisoft Insists
The highly-anticipated Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in development and is an ambitious project, according to a recent tweet from Ubisoft. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the follow-up to 2003’s Beyond Good & Evil, especially as Ubisoft has teased Beyond Good & Evil 2 on a handful of occasions. These teases have given players a glimpse into what the game might look like, but there is still much about its story and gameplay that remains unknown.
In fact, most of the details surrounding Beyond Good & Evil 2 are unknown. The game was first announced five years ago via a cinematic trailer in 2017, which depicted a grittier, edgier vision of the series’ world. There was a substantial gameplay demo for the game in 2019, which served to offer a better look at combat, traversal, and investigative game mechanics. It highlighted what seems to be an incredibly ambitious project in terms of visuals and scope, even if some criticisms were leveled at the combat and flight mechanics. However, things have been mostly silent since, and developments like the departure of Beyond Good & Evil creator Michel Ancel have led to doubts over the game’s production.

Despite a long period of radio silence, Beyond Good & Evil 2 appears to still be in development, and it looks as though Ubisoft is still aiming high with the game. A tweet from Ubisoft Barcelona recently advertised a job listing for a Senior Gameplay Animator for Beyond Good & Evil 2, calling the game “one of the most ambitious Ubisoft projects to date.” Aside from showing off a bit of stylish concept art, the tweet holds no other solid details regarding Beyond Good & Evil 2.

While not exactly a promise to fans, the tweet at least confirms Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in development. However, the listing may not exactly inspire confidence, as it indicates there is still a great deal of work to be done on the game. Ancel initially suggested a Beyond Good & Evil 2 beta could come in 2019, but if the company is still filling key roles like a Senior Gameplay Animator, the game could be even further off than many were anticipating.
The past few years have suggested fraught and unstable conditions at Ubisoft, which could have played a part in Beyond Good & Evil 2′s slow development. Ancel left the company shrouded in controversy, and allegations of abuse and sexual misconduct have been leveled at other executives. There have long been concerns about an exodus of Ubisoft talent in connection to these controversies and the new live-service, microtransaction-driven direction of the studio – concerns which may appear more prescient given the extended development and new job listing for Beyond Good & Evil 2.
