Black Panther’s White Brother Calls Out His Racist ‘Savior’ Story

Bitter about T’Challa and his place on the throne, Hunter drifted on to become the most devoted and loyal Wakandan. In a typical “white savior” story (such stories can be found at: ghost ’30s comic book series and even elements of other DC and Marvel properties), perhaps Hunter would usurp T’Challa and become the king himself. Here, however, Hunter’s noble intentions backfire: he becomes an overzealous leader of the Wakandan secret police, exiled from the country, and ultimately defeated by Black Panther after killing innocent people only to lure T’Challa out.

If Black Panther had been written 20 years ago, White Wolf could easily have been the protagonist of the entire series. But the creative team knew the “White Savior” narrative and took steps to not only avoid the trope, but also subvert it with Hunter. Resentful of T’Challa and his place upon the throne, Hunter was driven to become the most loyal and devoted Wakandan.
