BOTW DLC Doesn’t Understand How Powerful Majora’s Mask Really Is

The Majora’s Mask in its original game of the same name has immense power. In the ancient past, the tribe that once possessed it used it for rituals designed to hex and bewitch others, before sealing it away due to its evil nature. It creates an entirely new world from Skull Kid’s imagination, one with its own culture and mythology. It may only be a parallel of Hyrule, but the fact that the mask was able to create Termina is a testament to exactly how powerful it truly is. Its exact nature is unknown, as is who Zelda‘s Majora was before becoming Majora’s Mask, but it is known that it desires destruction and chaos.

Aside from being a massively powerful object, Majora’s Mask is also the final boss of its game. It has three different stages, each stronger than the last, requiring players to attack it a certain way in order to defeat it. It’s easily the most difficult battle in Majora’s Mask, and although it’s not truly fair to compare it to BOTW‘s Calamity Ganon given the differences between the games, the two are somewhat comparable. It doesn’t appear to use much of the sheer power it apparently has in Majora’s Mask, but even with Zelda‘s Fierce Diety Link Mask, Majora’s Mask is still an intense fight that many longtime Zelda players likely remember well.

How BOTW Nerfed Majora’s Mask

There are a great many powerful and valuable weapons and pieces of armor in BOTW, but its version of Majora’s Mask doesn’t stack up well to most of them. It only offers one point of defense, and cannot be upgraded to give it more. It does have a somewhat handy ability; while Link wears it, Bokoblins, Moblins, and Lizalfos will not attack him if he approaches, and Lynel will also stay passive for a short time before becoming hostile. This mimics the effects of the masks that players can buy from Kilton that have the same effects, albeit with one mask for each different type of monster. They’re some of the best items at Kilton’s monster shop in BOTW, but far from the best in the game, and Majora’s Mask is the same way.

The difference between BOTW‘s mask and Majora’s Mask‘s is striking, and the game using it as a one-off reference is somewhat disappointing. With so much else to do in the game, and so many other DLC introduced, it was never going to become a focal point, but it could have at least had some use aside from turning monsters’ attention away from Link. Its effect is also only vaguely related to the powers of the original Majora’s Mask. While the extent of its abilities aren’t fully revealed, they are known to be a dark power. The monsters of BOTW certainly seem to be fairly dark themselves, but they’re more connected to Ganon’s Malice – a separate power than the evil of Majora’s Mask – than anything else, and since Ganon isn’t the main villain of Majora’s Mask, it seems strange that the mask would be able to affect BOTW‘s monsters.

It Makes Sense That Majora’s Mask Was Depowered In BOTW

Having Majora’s Mask wield the same power in BOTW that it does in Majora’s Mask would have been somewhat ridiculous and possibly could have broken the game. The power to create entire worlds and bring the moon crashing down to earth is hard to represent when it’s not the focus of a game’s plot, so BOTW‘s version of the mask not having the same strength that the original does may have been a good thing so as not to have the DLC eclipse the base game. Including a Majora’s Mask with an overpowered effect or an extremely high defensive value also could have been just as bad as an underpowered one, and would have made some of BOTW‘s most powerful bosses and enemies too easy.

Even if it couldn’t have portrayed Majora’s Mask’s full power, BOTW still could have used it in a better way than it did. A side quest centered around it, even a small one that didn’t just involve finding it in the Kolomo Garrison Ruins, might have helped make it feel more special, especially if the mask were made a bit stronger. Skull Kid making a reappearance, perhaps in a weakened form, feels like a missed opportunity for a quest line that could have added even more adventure and excitement to BOTW than it already had. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild squandered a great deal of Majora’s Mask’s potential, and may have made a mistake in ignoring its true power.
