Captain Carter’s Elevator Fight Is More Brutal Than Captain America’s

Warning: contains spoilers for Captain Carter #3!

Marvel’s Captain Carter finally receives her own ‘elevator fight scene’ moment that originally began with Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – but it’s far more brutal. The close-quarters fight sequence is a highlight in the MCU, as Steve Rogers’ former allies turn on him and attempt to capture him in an elevator at the SHIELD headquarters. But Captain Carter #3 brings the close-quarters combat to an entirely different character – and the fight takes on a terribly dark twist.

Captain Carter has exploded in popularity with the release of 2021’s Marvel’s What If…? series on Disney+. The character has only grown more popular with fans in the following year, appearing in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and finally her own Marvel comic series. Now, Captain Carter finds herself hunted by her own government in the same manner as Steve Rogers in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Captain Carter #3, written by Jamie McKelvie with art by Marika Cresta, Lizzie Braddock has just foiled an assassination attempt on her life, and discovers the weapons used in the attack belonged to the STRIKE Agency. She tells the new superhero Peggy Carter, who decides to infiltrate her superior’s computer to determine the people responsible. Unfortunately, she’s suddenly and without warning summoned to a briefing room for an impromptu meeting…which is actually a trap to murder Carter that very day.

While thematically similar to Captain America’s fight in the elevator, multiple elements in Captain Carter #3 work together to make this fight much more dangerous for the hero. While the Hydra agents in Winter Soldier are aiming to take Steve Rogers alive – hence why the agents only carry stun batons and no actual firearms – Captain Carter goes up against STRIKE agents with actual guns – and many more of them. Captain America was the first person in the elevator and three groups of agents followed on subsequent floors, allowing him to have a tactical advantage. Captain Carter is walking into a room already populated with dozens of agents and has no such advantage.

Carter eventually bests the agents with her vibranium shield and escapes the headquarters, surviving one of her first major trials as a patriotic superhero: being betrayed by her own country. Captain America has experienced this before in spades, but not Captain Carter, who was only recently revived from the ice. Captain Carter’s elevator fight scene may be more brutal than Captain America’s, but it serves the same distressing purpose: it forces the hero to learn that the country they fight for does not always have their best interests in mind.

Captain Carter #3 is available now from Marvel Comics.
