Your kids will love the simple mechanism that takes this cat out of the box. We’re pretty sure that once they make their fists (using our template, available at the end of this tutorial), they’ll start creating their own popups and even improving this mechanism.
We have created two beautiful designs, both cat themed (perfect).
The first design features a cat in a cardboard box (because cats tend to obsess over these, they don’t). We made a coloring version and one is pre-colored.
The second design also has a mouse that opens at the bottom. And on the other side, a cat is ready to pounce on the mouse. Super cute and fun.
Ready to make one or two? Let’s do this!
How to make a paper cat toy with our model
What do you need
- one of our printable templates (you can get them at the end of this tutorial).
- printer
- paper (we recommend thicker print paper)
- coloring support if you are going to print the tutorial in black and white
- the scissors
- scoring tool (we only use a stick)
- gum
We made ours on 120 gsm paper.
Follow these step-by-step instructions
Print the model of our cat pop-up box paper toy (you can get it at the end of this tutorial).
Color the cat (and mouse) if you printed our models in black and white.
Cut out the box template (large long rectangle).
Flip it over and color it.
We show you how to make the cat and mouse combo box and decided to create a lawn landscape.
The scene was colored with different shades of green using brush markers to achieve the look of grass.
You can make any view you want.
Cut out all the other pieces for this crafty project.
It’s time to fold, fold, fold!
Let’s start with the box. Fold along the dotted lines – mark each fold to make it super clear (we used a craft stick).
Apply glue to the last “wing” that says glue.
And glue the ends together.
You should see a nice little rectangle with “extra” curves on the long end.
Now fold the small rectangles. You should get an M-shape.
Apply glue to one side only, where the glue is written on the folded “M-shaped rectangle”.
Paste it inside the box, in the specified area (where it says glue).
The middle part of the M-shape should face up with the top pointing almost out of the box.
Apply glue to the other side of the “M-shaped rectangle” where it says glue.
Paste on other specified for adhesive.
Get the cat. Apply glue to the cat – its back and only the lower part of the body and glue it inside the box (on the M-shaped rectangle).
Press the box and the cat should come out.
Now turn the box and repeat all the steps for the mouse.
Finished? Now when you tap the box, a cat will appear at the top and a mouse will appear at the bottom.
Pretty cool isn’t it?
The other design features a ready-made cat (the design even has some cool embellishments for the box).

Your kids will love the simple mechanism that makes this cat pop out of the box. We are pretty sure that once they make their fist one (using our template that you can grab at the end of this tutorial) they will start creating pop out boxes of their own and even building on this mechanism.
We created two lovely designs, both with cat theme (just seemed perfect).
The first design features a cat in a cardboard box (as cats tend to be obsessed with those aren’t they). We made a version to color in and one already precolored.
The second design also has a mouse that pops up on the bottom side. And on the other side, a cat is ready to jump on the mouse. Super cute and fun.
