Doctor Strange Parody Poster Replaces Stephen With SpongeBob’s Patrick Star
Warning: This article contains mild spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
A new parody poster for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness replaces the MCU sequel’s characters with variants of SpongeBob SquarePants‘ Patrick Star and his family. Marvel Studios’ latest adventure sees Doctor Strange protecting America Chavez, a young super-powered being who can jump through different universes. The film also makes Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch a villain, with the character wanting America’s powers to reunite with her sons Billy and Tommy in another universe.
Patrick Star of course doesn’t have any connections to the MCU and was introduced far before Marvel Studios’ cinematic universe. Patrick made his debut in the first episode of SpongeBob SquarePants when the series premiered on Nickelodeon in 1999. Bill Fagerbakke has voiced the character for over 20 years; he also voiced Patrick in all three SpongeBob movies in 2004, 2015, and 2020. Most recently, Fagerbakke starred in The Patrick Star Show spinoff, which focused on the titular starfish and his family. Patrick’s parents Herb and Margie appeared all the way back in SpongeBob season 2, but The Patrick Star Show redesigned the characters and renamed them Cecil and Bunny. It also included Patrick’s adopted sister Squidina and his grandfather GrandPat.

Now, the official Patrick Star Instagram account has shared a poster for a fake movie called Doctor Patrick in the Multiverse of Machinations. The art shows various versions of Patrick, his parents, and Squidina. The poster’s title is a reference to Patrick’s iconic SpongeBob line “The inner machinations of my mind are an enigma.” The original post from Nickelodeon’s account can be seen below:

The characters in the MCU are some of the most well-known superheroes in the world due to the franchise’s popularity, but SpongeBob SquarePants also has its own superhero characters that form the team International Justice League of Super Acquaintances (IJLSA). The Quickster, Captain Magma, the Elastic Waistband, and Miss Appear fought alongside Mermaid Man, who were all parodies of Marvel and DC characters. Barnacle Boy later teamed with Mermaid Man, forming one of the franchise’s most iconic duos. A superhero movie based around these characters could be a fun project for Paramount+, but since the voice actors for Mermaid Man (Ernest Borgnine) and Barnacle Boy (Tim Conway) have both passed away, even that likely won’t ever happen.
Even though Doctor Patrick in the Multiverse of Machinations isn’t actually going to happen, it’s still a humorous idea for a movie. SpongeBob SquarePants has joked about real films before, most notably in the season 2 episode featuring Nosferatu, so it’s a genius idea from Nickelodeon’s marketing team to promote their franchise using Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ current popularity. Unfortunately, as entertaining as a Marvel/SpongeBob crossover would be, it won’t ever happen unless Disney buys Nickelodeon at some point down the road.
