Downton Abbey 2: Is Matthew Goode in A New Era?

Matthew Goode as Henry Talbot in Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey: A New Age reunites the franchise’s massive cast and features new additions as you travel the Crawleys and the French Riviera to investigate Lady Violet’s mysterious past.

It’s pretty significant that after all these years, all of these actors are coming back to play all of these characters, but there’s one notable flaw when it comes to the sequel’s promotional material: Matthew Goode, who plays Henry Talbot. Married to Michelle Dockery’s Lady Mary, the character only had a small appearance in the first film in 2019 – as he rushed home from the Chicago auto show he was attending to accompany his wife at a lavish ball.

Despite his short screen time, he has appeared in both posters and trailers. When fans realized that wasn’t the case this time around, they started wondering if he was in. It wasn’t like that, apparently.

Henry is mentioned several times in Downton Abbey: A New Era, and it was previously mentioned that he was at a gathering in Istanbul when the family last heard of him. Perhaps more importantly, Mary’s sister Edith (Laura Carmichael) asks after her, often wondering how she feels about her long-distance marriage to her sister. Mary explains that racing enthusiast Henry fell in love with “cars, speed and adventure”, and himself, or at least likes to think. Edith later suggests that she might have hoped that Mary’s love for her would have undone the other two, but sadly that is not the case.

While the rest of the Crawley clan travels to France to visit Violet (Maggie Smith), the Dowager Countess of Grantham, who has been abandoned by a wealthy Marquess, Mary stays home to keep an eye on the team. production of the film engaged. Downton to make a silent film. Meanwhile, she catches the eye of her director, Jack Barber (Hugh Dancy).

During a conversation between the couple, Mary tells Jack that she reminds him of her first husband, Matthew (Dan Stevens), prompting him to investigate Henry.

“Is there a problem in heaven? Jack wonders as he replies with a smile, “I don’t need to tell you that marriage is a novel full of intrigue from start to finish.”

Near the end of the film, Jack asks Mary if he can kiss her, but Mary refuses his offer and the two part as friends.

In a recent interview with Extra TV, Goode admitted she was too busy filming The Offer, a ten-part series about the making of The Godfather, to appear on Downton Abbey: A New Era. There is always a chance for Henry to return if his schedule is clearer, if a third installment is made.

Downton Abbey: A New Era is in UK cinemas now. It will be released in the United States on May 20. If you want to see more movies coming out in 2022, check out our list of upcoming movies and plan future movies.

Henry is mentioned a few times in Downton Abbey: A New Era, having been pointed out early on that he was at some rally in Instanbul when the family heard from him last. Most notably, perhaps, is when Mary’s sister Edith (Laura Carmichael) asks after him, and quizzes her sibling on how she feels about her frequently long-distance marriage. Mary explains that racing enthusiast Henry is in love with “cars, speed and adventure” – and her too, or at least she likes to think. Edith then suggests that Mary might have hoped that his affections for her may have cancelled the other two out, but alas, that has not proven to be the case.
As the rest of the Crawley clan set off to France to visit the villa Violet (Maggie Smith), the Dowager Countess of Grantham, has been left by a wealthy marquis, Mary stays home to keep an eye on the film production crew that’s hired out Downton to make a silent flick. During said time, she catches the eye of its director, Jack Barber (Hugh Dancy).
During one conversation between the pair, Mary tells Jack that he reminds her of her late first husband Matthew (Dan Stevens), which prompts him to probe her about Henry.
“There’s trouble in paradise?” Jack wonders, as she replies with a smile, “You don’t need me to tell you that marriage is a novel full of plot twists along the way.”
Towards the end of the movie, Jack asks Mary whether he can kiss her, but she turns down his offer and the twosome appear to part ways as friends.
During a recent interview with Extra TV, Goode admitted that he was simply too busy filming The Offer, a ten-episode series about the making of The Godfather, to appear in Downton Abbey: A New Era. If his schedule is clearer, there’s always a chance that Henry could make a comeback if a third installment is made.
