Elden Ring Bosses Have Been Quietly Nerfed, Says Report

According to YouTuber Illusory Wall, a number of Elden Ring bosses were nerfed upon the launch of the RPG’s 1.04 update. This change in the patch most notably tackles duo and trio boss battles featuring more than one enemy. And, make no mistake, Elden Ring’s duo battles with foes such as the Valiant Gargoyle or the Godskin Duo make an already challenging game that much more punishing.

Nearly three years after its initial E3 2019 announcement, Elden Ring hit stores for PC and consoles earlier this year. Saying it lived up to the hype and anticipation seems a gross understatement, especially when considering the widespread praise it received from critics and players alike. The action role-playing title sits on countless shortlists as a Game of the Year contender. Players also hold out hope that FromSoftware will continue to support the experience with content updates and DLC releases. While the studio has yet to confirm its long-term plans in this regard, evidence that drastic changes have impacted the game continues to mount.

YouTuber Illusory Wall (via VG247) recently created a video outlining the most notable “unlisted game changes” that have gone live in Elden Ring since launch. In discussing Elden Ring’s 1.04 patch, specifically, the content creator reported that several group boss fights were nerfed, essentially making them a little more forgiving. This doesn’t apply to all duo and trio boss encounters, though; as such, those annoying Gargoyles remain taxing to deal with, Illusory Wall claimed. Souls modder King Bore discovered the groups that did receive adjustments were altered via AI modifications, such that enemies become less aggressive when “they’re not the primary attacker.” In addition, new AI flags reworked “team effectivity,” lowering the number of foes identified as the primary attacker in a fight. Players should find that some enemies in duo or trio encounters will now stand around or strafe more frequently when not participating in offensive maneuvers.

The above suggests users who faced off against, say, the Crystalian Duo in Elden Ring at launch may find the annoying pair a bit easier to manage in another playthrough. Players probably shouldn’t let their guards down too much, however. This is still Elden Ring, after all. And, again, not every group boss battle underwent AI alterations with the advent of 1.04.

Notably, these changes don’t mark the only ways in which FromSoftware has quietly refined the experience since launch. Illusory Wall pointed out that Elden Ring’s map received a few updates in the weeks following its initial rollout, as well. Another interesting unlisted game change includes the removal of branches outside the wall in Sellia Town.
