Great Elden Ring Runes Revealed

Many major bosses in Elden Ring drop Grand Runes, legendary artifacts that can be added to your character for potential bonuses if limited. After restoring one, you can go to any Grace site and use the “Great Runes” menu option to effectively place it in the Great Rune slot.

This is where things get complicated. On their own, Great Runes do nothing, but if you use an Expendable Runic Bow while equipped, it will have a temporary effect on you, depending on which Great Rune you have in the slot. For example, using an Arc Rune effectively equipped with the Great Rune of Godrick grants a temporary bonus to all of your attributes, making you better at everything for a short time. Radahn’s Great Rune increases your health, stamina, and FP. Whichever you choose, it’s still a powerful ability and serves well when used right before or even during boss fights.

How to Restore Great Runes

Any Great Runes you find must be strengthened in a Divine Tower, and specifically the tower in the same area as the boss that dropped that Great Rune. For example, killing Renalla at Raya Lucaria Liurnian Academy will require you to restore the Great Rune in the nearby Lurnia Divine Tower. This will only work for that particular large rune, and you only have to do this once. This is true throughout the game, but some towers are harder to penetrate than others and require you to kill tough enemies, find items, or solve puzzles. They all follow the same visual theme that sets them apart – huge, layered structures of dark stone, often (but not always) with a bridge extending to another midpoint. We even covered how to find the first of these and restore the Great Rune of Godrick in our guide on how to find Limgrave’s Divine Tower in Elden Ring.

Runic Ark Farming

The runic bows used to trigger the great runes are rather rare and most With few exceptions, there is no real pattern for where to find them. Buildings after Godrick tend to be located in more structured areas such as temples, places of power, or those associated with big bosses, but appear outside of them. The trader on the cliffs between Raya Lucaria Academy and the Great Dectus Elevator even sells a few like the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold. If you want something more productive than just exploring, here are two options.

However, we did find an enemy that seemed to have a slim chance of taking them down: standard giant rats that spawn in various places around the Lands In Between, such as the basements beneath Stormveil Castle or the beams of Liurnia’s Divine Tower. We’ve seen Rats drop Runic Bows from time to time when killed, but at such a slow rate that farming isn’t quickly rewarded. Still, if you’re struggling with a boss, the chance to power up might be worth it. Increase your Arcane stat for the best chance of finding items and try to kill them as efficiently as possible.

  • Go kill bosses in other games. If you need runic bows, the most effective way to do so is to help other players kill bosses, which will always reward the helping player with a runic bow (and many runes). Find an easier or low-level boss, leave a gold call sign outside the door, and wait to be summoned.
  • Cut the rats. Standard Giant Rats spawning in various parts of Midlands, such as the basements beneath Stormveil Castle or the beams of Liurnia’s Divine Tower, can be used to raise Runic Bows. We’ve seen rats occasionally drop them when they kill them, but farming at a slow enough rate wouldn’t be immediately rewarded. Still, if you’re struggling with a boss, the chance to power up might be worth it. Increase your Arcane stat for the best chance of finding items and try to kill them as efficiently as possible.
