In some cases, when you create an AOL Mail account in a different mobile app, you may not need to enter IMAP settings. For example, when adding an AOL Mail account to the iPhone Mail app, go to: Passwords and Accounts Select the section in iPhone settings and AOL. The phone is preconfigured to include IMAP settings other than your username and password.

Features not available in other messaging apps

When you access AOL Mail from another mail app, you can send and receive email and access your AOL folders. However, the following features are not available:

  • Message status: You cannot retrieve unopened emails from AOL users and check the status of a sent message, as you do from the AOL Mail interface.
  • spam: You cannot access the Report as Spam button. To report an email as spam, move it to the spam or junk folder of the email client.
  • mail deleted: Some email applications do not display deleted emails. Some show deleted emails in the original folder, but mark the message for deletion.

Why IMAP?

AOL recommends using IMAP settings in an email client instead of POP3, although both protocols are supported.

IMAP syncs the service with your AOL Mail account. Whatever you do with a message in the mail service or app, it will show up in the AOL Mail interface on AOL.

POP protocols do not synchronize email transactions. POP protocols download a copy of the email from AOL. If you delete the email in one place, it won’t be deleted in the other.
