Google to Launch Repair Program for Pixel Phones

The result of a new partnership with iFixit

Much like Samsung, Google is working with iFixit to launch a new repair program for Pixel phones that includes a repair kit and parts.

The program will launch this summer, with phone parts such as batteries, displays and cameras made available on iFixit’s website for the Pixel 2 through the Pixel 6 Pro. Future models will also be supported in the program. Google says the reason for these new repair options is its commitment to hardware durability.

The repair kit comes with a variety of iFixit tools, including a suction arm to remove the screen and ESD-Safe tweezers to move internal parts. The kit and spares are only available in “…the US, UK, Canada, Australia and EU countries where Pixel is available”.

Google hasn’t said whether it plans to expand this program elsewhere, but says it’s already working with other repair providers in countries like Japan. When it comes to software repair, Google provides this service for free. You will need to boot your Pixel phone into Fastboot mode if you want to calibrate the software.

The tech giant said it decides how easily a particular Pixel model can be repaired, then creates subsequent tools and training courses. Currently, only authorized partners are exclusive to this information, but there are plans to expand the availability of these resources.

Since 2020, Google has made new commitments to make its products more environmentally and repair friendly. For US schools, Google has partnered with Acer and Lenovo for a Chromebook repair program.

Google said that from 2022 all hardware products will have recycled materials, and the company is trying to achieve plastic-free packaging by 2025.
