Although the Green Lantern was mentioned earlier in the issue as the much more apt nickname, the Emerald Gladiator, she doesn’t have the same ring as the “Awakened Crusader”. To speak of a hero as “awakened” is perhaps appropriate. Still, it seems very inappropriate to use it again, especially in a modern context, because it has a double meaning that DC Comics would probably want to avoid.
Luckily, DC Comics has consistently called Green Lantern a “Waking Crusader.” Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern pseudonym may not have had the same meaning when the publisher published it sixty years ago, but it’s hard to read without laughing now. As a result, “Waking Crusade” was a unique moniker, as DC realized even at the time that it probably shouldn’t have been in print.
