How Producers Film and Cast The Below Deck Franchise

Some cast members are specifically hired to bring one series’ fans to the next, such as Chef Ben Robinson from Below Deck and Below Deck Mediterranean. “When it comes to casting, it really comes down to: Are they working now, how are they doing, and would they be able to continue to carry story?” Nadine explains. Others, like Below Deck Down Unders Aesha Scott, were particularly sought after for having a personality fit for reality television. Nadine says that having a mix of people working on the Below Deck yachts not just increases interest in the program, but changes the “narrative and conversation” as well.

The Below Deck Crew Films 24 Hours A Day

The Below Deck crew has to constantly be alert in order to to capture everything that goes down, which means that each production team works 12-hour shifts. When a producer clocks out for the day, they go back to the crew’s hotel and compare notes with the others. “Yes, we are actually on the boat and we have a 24-hours-a-day shoot schedule,” Nadine says before remarking, “This workplace is nothing but mundane, since you really live and sleep all in the same place.”

It Takes Almost A Year To Finish A Season

Despite filming around the clock during Below Deck‘s production schedule, post-production alone takes around eight months to complete. “You have to really be detail orientated with a show like this in regard to catching specific audio,” Nadine explains, as she references the unseen hookups between Below Deck season 3’s Rocky Dakota and Eddie Lucas. With so much work going into just one season, Nadine says the cast and crew become like family, admitting that she considers Below Deck‘s Hannah Ferrier to be “like a sister.” The Below Deck franchise has no plans to slow down, meaning that Nadine and the other producers will continue to work hard on future BDSYBelow Deck Mediterranean, and Below Deck Down Under seasons.
