Dropbox is a cloud-based storage platform that you can use to store (and access) files remotely. If you’ve been using Dropbox for a while and have downloaded a lot of files, or you’re running out of storage space in your Dropbox account, delete unnecessary files to free up space.

Deleting files from Dropbox using Desktop Client

The following sections contain screenshot instructions using the Dropbox desktop client for macOS. If you’re using the desktop client for Linux or Windows, you might notice a few minor differences, but you can follow them.

Open the Dropbox desktop client and navigate to the file you want to delete.

Right-click the file you want to delete, then To delete.

You can also click on a file, Three points in the preview on the right, then To delete. A simpler option is to drag and drop any file to your computer’s trash.

Go to Dropbox.com in a web browser and sign in to your account.

Navigate to the file you want to delete.

You can recover the deleted file for a limited time. Your storage space is not released until it is permanently deleted. To recover or permanently delete the file you just deleted in the previous steps deleted files in the left menu.
