How to play Elden Ring multiplayer coop with friends

hand ring

The Elden Ring cluster and multiplayer is a really fun part of the Elden Ring experience, but unlike the Elden Ring Summons and Ash Spirits NPCs you can use, it’s not the easiest to set up – instead we let’s see how to do it here. Play with real people, friends and strangers in Elden Ring.

The most important thing here is that Elden Ring co-op multiplayer is quite limited and focused, it’s designed to guide players towards a specific goal and you both work together towards that goal. As such, it’s best to get help with bosses and tricky areas, having a friend or two helps you through the toughest challenges the game has to offer. With that in mind, here’s how to play Elden Ring co-op and multiplayer with friends, what it does, its penalties, and its perks.

To play Elden Ring in multiplayer with friends, players must jump a few hoops first, as the set has its own set-up limits. One of Elden Ring’s online multiplayer has one player acting as the “finger host” and everyone else then joins their world as a fictional player, effectively assisting the host in whatever they make.

  1. To play with your friends, you will both need internet connections on your consoles/computers (and whatever subscription service you need for online gaming).
  2. After that, you both need to open the game menu and swipe to “Multiplayer”.
  3. Once there, select “Settings” and enter a multiplayer passcode. It could be anything, but as long as you and your friends entered and matched correctly, that’s all that matters. These passwords only allow you to see yourself, not millions of other players.
  4. Now that that’s done, anyone who won’t be a host needs to use a special item in the multiplayer menu called Little Gold Effigy. Aka, anyone should do this except the person who needs help in a boss fight or in a tough area. This will display a message that says “Sending cooperative flag to catch pool”.
  5. If you don’t have the small golden statue, return to the first area just outside Stranded Cemetery and find the Tree Sentinel. It will be leaned against the Effigy of the Martyr of the region. Speaking of what…
  6. The owner should find a small statue of Martyr Effigy, especially in the area where he needs help. They are small, creeping statues with outstretched arms, often found at the entrance to dungeons or outside boss arenas.
  7. Interact with the small golden effigy to open the summoning pool which generates a symbol that will allow you to summon friends using matching passwords. You should now be able to bring them!

Effects of cooperative play

How does the Elden Ring cluster work?

Players brought to the Elden Ring as Relegated Ghosts are not as powerful as they are in their own world. They have half as many bottles as they normally would, and their stats are often weakened for lower level companions of two top players to prevent bosses from standing all over them.

Cooperation is also triggered with a specific target in mind – namely the area boss. Wherever the host triggers Martyr Effigy, it makes everything a quest. For example, if the hosts are bringing players to Stormveil Castle, the goal is to destroy the castle boss, Inoculated Godrick. Once done, the mission is complete and the Ghosts are returned to their game.

The Elden Ring cluster supports up to three simultaneous players; a Host of Fingers and two golden Ghosts to support them. It’s also not cross-platform, so players can’t battle with friends on other consoles or computers.

How to unlock co-op multiplayer

As far as we know, Elden Ring co-op multiplayer unlocks in the Elden Ring at the end of the tutorial, leaving Stranded Graveyard in the grassy realm of Limgrave and Midlands. However, we don’t recommend triggering it just yet – the multiplayer set is objective-based and you’ll usually have to explore within the first few hours. Nevertheless, look for the effigies of the martyrs and write them down to know where you can attract allies in the blink of an eye.

Players who are happy to be summoned by anyone can use a multiplayer menu item called Wrapped Finger of Tarnished, located right next to the small golden effigy. This places a golden symbol that appears in random player sets and can be triggered by them, where the player is standing.

However, these symbols are not visible until the potential server uses an item called Furlcalling Finger Remedy in this menu. So if you want to summon allies, use the Furlcalling Finger walkthrough and you’ll see the symbols left behind by those who use Blackened’s Furry Finger. Fortunately, these names are very simple.
