How to uninstall Cortana

If you want to remove Cortana, you’ve come to the right place. The good news is that while the company continues to make this less common on devices like the best Windows laptops, it’s pretty simple to disable Microsoft’s digital assistant.

We don’t know if Microsoft has ceded the domain to Alexa, Google Assistant, and (possibly) Siri…but that’s a question for another day. We are here to discuss how to remove Cortana with instructions for both common users and advanced users.

Microsoft would most likely prefer you to get rid of Cortana by moving to Windows 11 where the digital assistant is not enabled by default. Even better, if you or someone you know has Cortana turned on (we’ll show you that later in this article), it’s relatively easy to turn it off again.

It looks like Microsoft isn’t giving up on Cortana. Instead, we see Cortana appear. other Places such as Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 Mobile Apps. So yes, even though you can remove Cortana from computers, it still shows up in the company’s Outlook and Teams apps.

As mentioned by Windows Latest, there are two ways to disable Cortana. You can stop it from opening automatically when you start your PC (the easiest way) or you can remove the new Cortana app from Windows 10 (which is a little harder). We have full instructions below.

How to Disable Cortana in Windows 10

  1. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. In Task Manager, Click on the start column.
  3. Choose Cortana.
  4. Click Disable.
  5. Later, Open the start menu.
  6. Find Cortana Under All Apps.
  7. Right click on Cortana.
  8. Choose Other.
  9. Click on app settings.
  10. Disable the switch next to “Runs at login”.

How to Uninstall Cortana App in Windows 10

  1. Open the Start menu and type powershell.
  2. Right click on Windows PowerShell.
  3. Select “Run as administrator”.
  4. Type the text below (minus signs ‘): ‘Get-AppxPackage -allusers Microsoft.549981C3F5F10 | Remove-AppxPackage’
  5. Press Enter.

Of course, advanced users bent on eliminating Cortana will have to dive even deeper into the Windows Registry – it’s even riskier for everyday users. We recommend skipping this part as it is less necessary and a bit dangerous.

You’ve already disabled Cortana and removed the app’s presence. That should be enough for a bit more peace of mind.

It’s another way to get in your way by removing Cortana from your startup apps.

  1. Right-click on the Windows Start button from the bottom of the screen
  2. Choose task manager
  3. Open start tab
  4. Locate and right click on Cortana
  5. Select Disable
