John Romero on Half-Life 2: “I believe any FPS developed after Half-Life 2 was influenced by it”

John Romero told Retro Gamer that he thinks “any FPS developed after Half-Life 2 is affected by it.”

The legendary Doom developer spoke to the magazine about the series’ impact on first-person shooters as a whole in its latest issue, which you can get now. Romero also adds to the piece, “He raised the bar for the genre. The key points to impress are a strong story, gameplay pace, realism of the world, variety of weapons, and use of physics.

He’s one of the few developers to help explain why Half-Life and its sequel are held so high. Another is Jonathan Chey, developer of System Shock 2 and co-founder of Bioshock developer Irrational Games, who discussed how Half-Life influenced System Shock 2 in its late development.

Chey told Retro Gamer, “While System Shock proved to be something different from Doom-style run-and-gun shooters in its dedication to world-building and simulation, Half-Life showed us how to blend some of these ideas into a more accessible game mechanic.

The feature catches up with Adam Engels, who was a project lead on the Black Mesa remake of the original Half-Life, as well as David Speyrer, who worked as a developer on Half-Life 2. You spent time (and even if it is not) at Black Mesa or City 17.
