Joker’s Best Costume Uses a Psychological Trick to Make Him Scarier

As the costume hides Joker’s eyes, it adds another layer to the otherworldliness and threat posed by the Clown Prince of Crime. Without seeing his eyes, readers are left in the dark as to where Joker’s gaze rests; is he looking at his infant hostage, or gazing straight into the soul of Andrea Beaumont, or the reader themselves? The reader’s focus can fill in the gaps as to what’s more disturbing. Furthermore, without seeing his eyes and what the character is focusing on,  it is impossible to tell what’s on Joker’s mind and gives him a new layer of unpredictability. Eyes often betray intent, and being able to tell what a character’s gaze fixates on is a key tool to predict their actions. With his eyes hidden in this way, Joker transcends his typical Clown Prince of Crime Persona, and becomes the nightmarish predator of Gotham, personally responsible for the greatest misfortune to befall Andrea Beaumont and so many others.

While Joker is a versatile character in his own right, his wardrobe plays a key aspect in determining the horror or humor of his portrayal. His best costume, a simple rain slicker and wide-brimmed hat, uses a simple psychological trick to elevate the character from Clown Prince of Crime to apex predator.

Batman/Catwoman #11 is available now from DC Comics.
