Juggernaut and Professor X’s Powers Are More Similar Than Fans Realize

Nightcrawler postulates that Charles “extraordinary” mind often can only go in “straight lines,” going “through things instead of around them,” which is an exact description of Juggernaut’s abilities. Once Juggernaut starts running in a straight line it is next to impossible to stop him, with anything, and this rigidity is what makes Cain so strong but also so unstoppable. For much of the X-Men’s history Professor X was infallible, until the mid-2000s when his abuse of his psychic powers became much clearer, and his inability to think outside of his narrow world view led to the X-Men’s downfall several times, as well as his murder at the hands of his former pupil Scott Summers. Nightcrawler’s Legion is all about “true” justice, through transformative care and chances for redemption, and it is clear that Kurt believes these values are diametrically opposed to Charles and The Quiet Council policy of throwing anyone in the Pit who breaks a law of Krakoa. It is fascinating to reflect on the similarities between Juggernaut and Xavier’s powers, as both of them use their blunt strength, Cain’s physical and Charles’ mental, to plow through enemies and friends barriers to get what they want, and Xavier clearly views himself as a God, while Cain gets his powers from a god.

While Juggernaut may have spent much of his life hating Charles Xavier for being a “perfect, moral” example of a man, Cain is quickly learning on Krakoa that much of what he thought about his stepbrother is simply untrue, and he may have way more in common with the former leader of the X-Men than he ever thought possible.

Legion of X #1 is now available from Marvel Comics.
