Last of Us Part 2’s Zebra Can’t Be Defeated, Even With Explosives

With the help of mods, YouTuber Speclizer learned The Last of Us Part II players cannot kill the zebra Abby encounters in flashbacks. One way developer Naughty Dog delivers Abby’s backstory in TLoU 2 is through flashbacks, a narrative device the sequel leans on quite heavily for both of its playable leading ladies. The zebra flashback proves especially significant as it establishes her role and, most importantly, that of her father in the Salt Lake City hospital incident that closed out the original game.

During the flashback sequence in question, Abby and her dad, Jerry, stumble across a zebra in the woods caught in a trap intended for wandering infected. Owen arrives shortly thereafter and assists the two in rescuing the frightened creature. These moments, while brief, accentuate Jerry’s feelings toward the preservation of all life as a doctor, though such a sentiment later treads a fine line of nuance when Ellie’s life as it relates to a potential cure is placed on the line. But there does exist one figure whose well-being was never in any real danger.

YouTuber Speclizer recently posted a “Mythbusters” video centered on testing mod-related myths in The Last of Us Part 2. The modder notably discovered that Ellie cannot kill Abby by any means during their final showdown. Speclizer’s latest myth video (via Eurogamer) takes a look at a few other aspects of the experience. The YouTuber used mods to test whether or not Abby could kill the zebra during the flashback segment in Salt Lake City. Animal lovers will be pleased to learn that neither firearms nor explosives so much as give the striped beast a splinter. The zebra revelation appears on-screen at around the 7:21 second mark in the video linked below:

The YouTuber found a few other interesting tidbits while tinkering with Last of Us Part 2 mods, as well. For one, while Joel can get off the horse during the sequel’s intro sequence, he’ll remain stuck in a T-Pose animation. Another intriguing find is that players cannot harm Nora cannot when Ellie chases her through the WLF hospital base. In addition, even with guns and a flamethrower, the axe-wielding brute Abby fights on Seraphite island cannot be taken out early.

After a couple of delays, Naughty Dog and Sony shipped The Last of Us Part 2 earlier in the summer of 2020. But fans continue to await the release of Factions, the multiplayer suite originally slated to launch alongside the award-winning single-player campaign. Rumors suggest the mode will release as a standalone title later this year, though Naughty Dog and Sony have yet to confirm as much.

The Last of Us Part II is playable on PS4 and PS5.
