Latest Moto G phones promise 5G on a budget

Motorola continues to expand its budget-focused Moto G line of smartphones with the latest additions that bring in more 5G-enabled handsets. One phone, the Moto G Stylus 5G for 2022, is a callback for last year’s stylus-equipped 5G phone, while the other – the Moto G 5G for short – brings a low-cost 5G alternative to the mixed.

It’s all in line with Motorola’s apparent philosophy for the Moto G series — If this phone doesn’t speak to you directly, we’ll offer a phone that does.. And with newcomers offering 5G connectivity for less than $500, budget-conscious shoppers probably won’t complain.

Here’s what you need to know about the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) and Moto G 5G before both 5G phones hit the market in the coming weeks.

Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) and Moto G 5G price and availability

The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) is coming first and hitting stores on April 28, but you can pre-order the phone today (April 21). The new version costs $499, a $100 markup over the Moto G Stylus 5G version released last year. (We’ll see what’s different about this year’s phone in a moment.)

You can order the Moto G Stylus 5G from Motorola.com and retail sites like Best Buy, Walmart, and Walmart. It also says that wireless carriers such as Motorola, Cricket Wireless, Dish, Boost Mobile, Republic Wireless, Verizon, AT&T, US Cellular Xfinity Mobile, Spectrum Mobile, Google Fi and Optimum Mobile will be rolling out the new Moto G Stylus 5G within months. coming.

It should be noted that Verizon is included in this list of wireless carriers, as this means the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) works with this carrier’s mmWave-based 5G towers, but for this compatibility you will need to purchase your phone directly from Verizon. The unlocked Moto G Stylus 5G supports sub-6GHz and C-band.

As for the Moto G 5G, it inherits the $399 price covered by last year’s Moto G Stylus 5G version. Coming unlocked at Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon.com, and Motorola.com on May 19. Cricket Wireless, Dish, Boost Mobile, Republic Wireless, AT&T, Xfinity Mobile, Spectrum Mobile, US Cellular, Consumer Cellular, Google Fi and Optimum Mobile are among the carriers gearing up to offer the Moto G 5G in the coming months.

As you might guess from this list, the Moto G 5G only works with sub-6GHz 5G networks, but like the Moto G Stylus 5G, this phone can take advantage of the new C-Band 5G spectrum.

Moto G Stylus 5G (2022): what you need to know

When you hear about a new Moto G stylus, your first thought is, “Hasn’t Motorola released one?” it happened. Surely you know your budget phones. The Moto G Stylus (2022) was actually released earlier this year, but it was an LTE-only model. This is the 5G version.

More importantly, the latest Moto G Stylus 5G runs on the Snapdragon 695 5G chipset. It’s not only more powerful than the Snapdragon 480 5G in the latest Moto G Stylus 5G, it’s also significantly better than the Helio G88 in this year’s LTE version of the Stylus. As this is our biggest complaint with the phone – performance was very slow – we expect the Moto G Stylus 5G to be better equipped to handle any apps you throw at it.

The screen is also more impressive. As with last year’s phone, you get a 6.8-inch screen with FHD+ resolution, but this time around Motorola has bumped the refresh rate to 120Hz for smoother scrolling and more immersive experiences. The 5,000mAh battery figures should deliver the multi-day battery life we’ve come to expect from Moto G phones, even with the power demands of a fast-refreshing screen.

The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) comes with a 50MP main lens and a triple camera accentuated by optical image stabilization – a feature Motorola believes will reduce blurry shots. The 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera offers a 118-degree field of view, allowing you to capture four times the background detail you’d get with the main lens. It also functions as a macro lens, with a dedicated depth sensor surrounding the rear cameras.

On the front, the 16MP selfie camera claims to offer a 4x improvement in low-light sensitivity. This should result in better self-portraits when the lights are low.

The highlight of the Moto G Stylus 5G remains the phone’s built-in stylus, which continues to be housed in a slot in the phone’s bezel. Motorola claims that 95% of Moto G Stylus owners regularly use the built-in input device to take notes, create sketches and edit photos.

A new feature in this year’s phone is creating Live Messages, where you can send text messages to recipients. Any drawing you make with Live Messages will appear as a line-by-line animation when you send it through popular messaging apps. It’s not the biggest productivity-boosting feature, but it does add a nice personal touch to the Moto G Stylus 5G’s tricks.

One of the things we want Motorola to add to these phones is longer software support. The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) is ready to receive a single software update, which will be the Android 13 update that Google will introduce later this year. (This is the same upgrade policy for the Moto G 5G.) Motorola continues to insist that a single software update is sufficient for customers looking for this type of budget phone. , but from our point of view, this considerably limits the value of what is otherwise. A promising low cost phone.

Moto G 5G: what you need to know

At $399, the Moto G 5G has less impressive specs than the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022). The call here is a 5G-connected phone that won’t break the bank.

Moto G 5g

Motorola is turning to a MediaTek Dimensity 700 system-on-chip to power the Moto G 5G. Looking at the track record we’ve had testing other MediaTek-powered Moto G phones over the past six months – everything from the Moto G Pure to the Moto G Power – it makes us a little nervous. All of these phones lagged noticeably in our tests, especially when it came to launching apps like the camera app. We hope the Moto G 5G will respond to this trend, but we’re not sure. For what it’s worth, we had mixed results from the Dimensity 700-powered Realme 8 5G when we tested this phone last year.

The refresh rate on the Moto G 5G’s 6.5-inch panel can’t match the 120Hz rate set by the Moto G Stylus 5G. But at 90Hz it’s faster than you’d expect from a budget device, with many stuck with a fixed 60Hz refresh rate. The Moto G 5G has the same 5,000mAh battery as the Moto G Stylus 5G, so battery life shouldn’t be an issue.

The Moto G 5G lacks the ultra-wide-angle camera of the Moto G Stylus 5G, but instead includes macro and depth sensors alongside the 50MP main camera. There is also no optical image stabilization on this camera.

Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) and Moto G 5G case

From what we’ve seen of both phones so far, the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) looks like an upgraded version of last year’s phone – we’ll see if it’s worth the $100 premium over that. to 2021. An opportunity to test the phone. Speaking of value, the Moto G 5G seems to appeal most to bargain hunters who want a 5G-ready device but don’t want to pay a premium price for it. As with the new Moto G Stylus, we’ll see what kind of performance the Moto G 5G offers at this price once we get our hands on the latest member of the growing Moto G family.
