Little Nightmares Developer Teases New Project In Creepy Video

Tarsier Studios, developer of Little Nightmares, has shared a brief clip alongside a tease for its next project, which could well offer clues to an upcoming video game. Last year’s Little Nightmares 2 sold over one million copies a month after its release, but despite these rock-solid sales, the future of the franchise remains uncertain. Much of this uncertainty comes down to the way that the game’s rights are split from Tarsier, as Bandai still owns the IP following Tarsier’s acquisition by Embracer Group.

Regardless of the current state of the franchise, Little Nightmares is a beloved and arguably underrated duology, and the first game did manage to find a surprising amount of success while releasing in the AAA whirlwind that was the spring 2017 release schedule. Both titles are fairly straightforward horror-puzzle games, giving players a 2.5D side-scroller perspective for most of the experience. While gameplay is well-crafted and polished, the atmosphere and art design are what make both Little Nightmares games stand out from the horror game pack. Unfortunately, Little Nightmares 3 is likely not happening, as Embracer Group has stated that Tarsier Studios will be moving on to different projects.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Little Nightmares fans may have gotten a glimpse into what one of these different projects is. The Tarsier Studios Twitter account recently shared a post with the caption, “we’ve been busy,” accompanying what looks to be a teaser video. The video is only six seconds long but shows three images: a tall, rickety structure in a misty environment, a car driving down a moonlit highway, and another shot of the first structure, this time with some sort of Lovecraftian beast perched atop it.

Speculation is likely to begin swirling for those who watch this clip, and for good reason; the teaser is purposefully vague and offers little in the way of concrete, explorable details. Little Nightmares 2 was well-received, so it’s possible that Tarsier Studios could be continuing its most popular series, but it’s also possible that this teaser is suggesting something only tangentially game-related, perhaps hinting at some sort of rebranding or even a release in a different entertainment medium.

With that said, a new video game is the most likely next step for Tarsier Studios. Given Embracer Group’s comments about the future of the franchise, and the imagery shown off in the teaser, it’s suggested that the next project will not be tied to the Little Nightmares franchise, however. Many in the gaming community are hopeful that Embracer Group will be giving its newly-acquired studios freedom to create as they see fit, so hopefully, Tarsier Studios will continue to deliver meaty atmosphere, satisfying gameplay, and, of course, frights.
