Netflix spent an eye-watering amount on each new Stranger Things season 4 episode

Netflix is throwing money upside down. According to a new industry report, Season 4 of Stranger Things has the kind of budget that would make it one of the most expensive TV shows ever made.

According to the Wall Street Journal, season 4 of Stranger Things “would cost $30 million per episode”. Split into two volumes, next season will consist of nine episodes, meaning the total budget could stretch north of a quarter billion dollars. This billion. Same.

By comparison, Marvel’s recent wave of Disney Plus shows were thought to have budgets between $100 million and $150 million per season, which is pretty small for what they’re dealing with in Hawkins, Indiana.

While the numbers are almost never announced, it seems the only series that even comes close to spending Stranger Things season 4 is the upcoming Lord of the Rings series on Amazon. The Hollywood Reporter claims that the first season of the TV trip to Middle-earth alone will cost the broadcaster $465 million. Even Smaug might not have the mess to pay for it.

That said, the Netflix sci-fi series won’t be making a big splash for a long time. Stranger Things will end after its fifth season.

Speaking to SFX magazine for the new issue, co-creator Matt Duffer said maybe they felt like they pulled the trigger too soon when saying goodbye to Eleven and company – but it’s the right decision.

“Even if there are five people, it will feel like it ends a little early,” Matt says. “We will feel like we still have a lot of gas left in the tank. But I think it’s better to end up asking for more. So finishing at five was the right decision.
