Comicsbeat has released an incredible 2021 Graphic Novel and Paperback Sales Report that highlights the current strength of the market specifically for manga. 2021 has been another big year for print manga sales, on a roll.

The review covers NPD Books sales tracking and all bookstore sales through NPD BookScan, which mirrors all bookstores in the data center. This includes Amazon and many major retailers, but it’s not a comprehensive overview of the industry – incomplete marketplaces like library buying, digital comics, or Scholastic book fairs. Despite these limitations, there are still some staggering numbers that mark the recent success of the comic book industry.

Report author Brian Hibbs explains, “In 2021, comics have completely exploded in a way that almost defies rationality – not only has raw circulation increased by almost 70% (!), but more than comics were sold in 2021 than in 2018, and 2019 combined (!!) If we compare the sales of 2021 with our first BookScan report of 2003, we see a growth of more than 558% in the number of copies sold (!!!). I’m not even sure I would have believed it if I hadn’t seen numbers written in black and white.

Hibbs notes that 64% of all sales are books by just 95 people – but he sees that as a good sign. “This is a huge expansion of the talent pool – there were only 51 people in 2020 accounting for 61% of sales,” Hibbs writes. Some of the most popular creators currently selling comics and manga include Dan Pilkey, creator of the Captain Underpants series; Kohei Horikoshi, creator of My Hero Academia; Authors of the Babysitter’s Club comic book adaptations; and YouTuber FGTeeV.

“What you can say is that in comics (and books in general, as far as I know), only a small number of creators do most of the work; and conversely, this likely means that the numerical majority of comics do not grow significantly in size in any given year.

Manga had a similar boom. Sales tripled in the top 50 and grew 280% in 2021 on a dollar basis. Although it is mainly concentrated in popular series such as Chainsaw Man, Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia, it shows that the cultural influence and popularity of manga is huge. increases over time.

The full Bookscan 2021 report can be found on Comicsbeat, where Hibbs digs into all aspects of the data. But the numbers are a hugely promising sign for the continued success of the industry.

Hibbs notes that 64% of all sales are books by just 95 people – but he sees that as a good sign. “This is a vast expansion of the talent pool – in 2020 there were only 51 people, which accounted for 61% of sales,” Hibbs writes. Some of the most popular creators currently selling comics and manga include Dan Pilkey, creator of the Captain Underpants series; Kohei Horikoshi, creator of My Hero Academia; the authors of the Babysitter’s Club graphic novel adaptations; and YouTuber FGTeeV.
“What you can tell is that only a small number of creators run the majority of business in comics (and books in general, as far as I can tell); and conversely, that probably means the numerical majority of comics aren’t actually grossing significantly in any given year.
