Nightwing and Robin’s Awesome Dynamic Is Built On A Lie

Damian’s stunning revelation is a heartbreaking one for fans of the pair. The two were once close allies when Dick adopted the identity of Batman and took on Damian as his Robin. The young hero grew to adore his mentor, even saying that they “were the best” when reflecting on their partnership. The dark scenario presented in DC vs. Vampires allows Damian to present a feeling his Prime Earth counterpart may have hidden deep down. Granted, Dick has killed Damian’s father in this continuity and that’s undoubtedly causing Damian to speak out of a place of pain and anger. But from the moment he was introduced, Damian was practically defined by the enormous attitude and ego he carried around. As the scion of the Wayne and al Ghul bloodlines, he believed he would grow up one day to conquer the world. Sure, Dick did a good job of helping the boy broaden his perspective when the two were working together, but Damian was conditioned by Talia and the League of Assassins for years. It’s not completely unreasonable to think that even as Damian softened up, he still believes himself to be better than others, even the people he cares for.

It’s hard to say if Damian in the main continuity feels the same way about his Grayson as their vampiric counterparts. But it does open the possibility that the beloved pair of Robin and Nightwing might not have the relationship fans believe that they do.

DC vs. Vampires: Hunters #1 is available now from DC Comics.
