PlayStation Plus’ new Premium tier means more work for some game developers

According to a new report from Game Developer, Sony will require select PlayStation game developers to create trial versions of their games as part of changes to the PlayStation Plus subscription service. These trials should last at least two hours if the game sold costs $34 or more.

The news comes after Sony announced in June that it would be renewing its PlayStation Plus service and adding new subscription tiers. A new tier of this service, called PlayStation Plus Premium, offers limited-time game trials in addition to classic titles from multiple generations of PlayStation consoles.

Sony would give developers up to three months to release a timed trial after a game is released on the PlayStation Store. If the developers wish to submit a demo instead of a trial version, Sony will confirm these games on a case-by-case basis. Citing developer sources, Game Developer says the requirements aren’t retroactive and don’t apply to new PlayStation VR games.

Polygon has reached out to Sony Interactive Entertainment for comment.

PlayStation Plus Premium, Sony’s new service that will include these new trial versions, will be available from June for $119.99 per year or $17.99 per month.
