PlayStation State of Play Announced For Next Week (& Fans Are Hopeful)
Sony has announced the next PlayStation State of Play event will take place next week, offering fans a new look at a range of upcoming games. The fact that God of War Ragnarok received an age rating means that speculation has begun about the games potentially being featured at the event, with hopes high for a 2022 release date announcement to close the show.
PlayStation’s 2022 schedule is looking somewhat dry in terms of exclusives. The start of 2022 was packed, with games like Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 being major first-party exclusives for the PS5 system, alongside huge third-party releases like Elden Ring. The second half of the year is looking fairly quiet across the board, though the summer gaming event period will soon begin, which should fill out the rest of the schedule with announcements.

The next batch of PlayStation reveals will happen next week, as the official PlayStation Twitter account has announced that a new State of Play event will happen on June 2. PlayStation Blog confirms that the event will run for nearly thirty minutes and that it will feature PlayStation VR2’s upcoming games, alongside “exciting reveals from our third-party partners.” While PlayStation hasn’t mentioned any potential first-party games, like God of War Ragnarok, fans are still sharing their hopes for a release date across social media. The June 2 State of Play will begin at 3 pm Pacific / 6 pm Eastern / 12:00am CET.

A God of War Ragnarok announcement seems like the safest bet for the PlayStation State of Play event, but there are some other big reveals that could also happen. Square Enix has promised FF16 news will arrive soon, following a 2021 announcement that was delayed due to the pandemic. The company has also promised that Final Fantasy VII Remake news is coming soon, and the series has been featured prominently in past State of Play events. There is also the expanded PlayStation Plus service, which has already launched in parts of Asia but has yet to launch in Japan, North America, or Europe. It’s possible that there will be some big announcements for that service, to hype it up ahead of its global launch.
Sony has notably skipped out on E3 during the last few years of the conference, preferring to move to the Nintendo Direct-style approach for its announcements. It seems that Sony will be kicking off the announcement season in 2022, with a State of Play that can get the jump on the upcoming Xbox and Bethesda event, and Summer Game Fest. There have been quite a few disappointing State of Play events in the past, but all Sony needs is God of War Ragnarok to save the day.
The next State of Play event will be held on June 2 at 3 pm Pacific / 6 pm Eastern / 12:00am CET.
