Power Rangers DEATH Ranger Villain Is A Win For Non-Binary Representation
Warning! Spoilers for Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1 by BOOM! Studios
The Power Rangers’ Death Ranger is a massive win for non-binary representation in more ways than one, as the new character not only introduces an NB character to the franchise but one that is a villain. While comic books and pop culture have introduced some great non-binary heroes to the mix in recent years, making the Death Ranger a terrifying villain hopefully starts a trend of more NB characters getting a chance to be evil.
BOOM! Studios revealed a brand new one-shot titled Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1 by Paul Allor (GI Joe), and Kath Lobo, which will introduce the Death Ranger, a new, non-binary Ranger, to the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers universe. While Death Ranger’s real name behind the mask hasn’t been revealed, BOOM teased the character as an Omega Ranger who became corrupted in a Death Ranger. The character will be non-binary and use they/them pronouns, as does the entire alien race the character was born from. Having more representation in the Power Rangers is huge, but the fact the Death Ranger is a villain makes the character even more intriguing.

I hit the end! I’m sure I didn’t see some because algorithm, so meta-response to the two most common QTs:
“The representation I wanted!”
And the representation you DESERVE!“This is literally just me!”
Yes, it ABSOLUTELY is. And thank you for the inspiration.I love you all.

Part of what makes Death Ranger so intriguing is that it’s one of the few times a non-binary character has been introduced as a straight-up villain. There’s no downplaying the character’s intentions, as their name is quite literally, Death Ranger. It’s a massive win for non-binary representation, as far too often non-binary characters are given smaller, often heroic roles in comics, opposed to being given a real chance to shine, regardless of their hero/villain affiliations. While some characters have bucked that trend (and we don’t want to downplay the current great non-binary heroes and villains in the comic book world), seeing a non-binary villain make such an impact before they even debut is huge.
The Death Ranger feels like a long-deserved moment for non-binary representation in comics. The villain looks cool, sounds cool, and hopefully exists long past the one-shot they’re set to appear in. It’s hard not to consider Death Ranger a win for the NB community. Readers can see Death Ranger debut when Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1 arrives in comic book stores on August 31st.
