Roman Reigns’ New WWE Contract Avoids A Major Problem
WWE avoided a major potential issue when Roman Reigns signed his latest contract with the company. Since unifying the Universal Championship and WWE Championship at WrestleMania 38, The Tribal Chief has been involved in major storylines on both Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown. A feud with Drew McIntyre was teased during the buildup to WrestleMania Backlash, while The Usos are set to unify the tag team titles in a match with RK-Bro this week as well.
The Bloodline has been, more or less, the heartbeat of WWE since July of 2021, with most other developments feeling minor in comparison. The trio headlined Backlash in a six-man tag that Reigns went on to win, and they continue to be a staple for both brands on a weekly basis. That’s why speculation about Reigns perhaps appearing on WWE television less frequently as part of his new deal sent such massive shockwaves through the wrestling landscape.

Even the possibility of Reigns working a reduced schedule should have been enough to turn the blood of WWE’s creative team cold. So much has gone into making Reigns feel like a major attraction. The “I Quit” match between Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair had been built up for years, but not even that contest could prevent Reigns from headlining WrestleMania Backlash alongside The Bloodline, RK-Bro, and McIntyre. His new deal not being of the Brock Lesnar variety is fantastic news for both WWE and fans of the product, and all involved should be breathing a major sigh of relief as this seems to be the best outcome for all parties.
WWE took quite some time to figure out what works and what doesn’t with Roman Reigns. For a long while, it seemed like creative wanted him to be the second coming of John Cena. The problem with that, of course, is that Peacemaker‘s John Cena works as a mega-positive face because that’s who he is in real life. It wasn’t a script that was handed to him or a character that was created for him. The man breathes hustle, loyalty, and respect. Asking Reigns to do the same wasn’t fair and didn’t work.
That’s why The Bloodline has clicked and has finally seen Reigns receive the kinds of reactions that Vince McMahon has been dreaming about since Roman’s days in developmental. He’s always had the look; no one has ever been able to say otherwise. But his work on the microphone left a lot to be desired for the new biggest face of WWE, and fans didn’t take too kindly to seeing him receive a seemingly endless push. Now all the pieces have been put together for Reigns, though, and at the age of 36, his wrestling prime is only just beginning.
There will be time for Hollywood. There’s always time for Hollywood, and audiences will likely see Reigns attempt to follow in the footsteps of Cena and The Rock before him when it comes to a career in movies. And why wouldn’t he want to take that road – a path that is paved with gold and offramps that are made of rolled-out red carpets at every turn. For the time being, however, the WWE Universe still have their Tribal Cheif. If last week’s contract scare teaches fans anything, it should be to enjoy Roman Reigns while he’s still active in WWE. Leaving is hard, but coming back is even harder.
