Sam Neill reveals the origins behind his shifting accent in Jurassic Park

jurassic park

Sam Neill will return as Alan Grant in Jurassic World Dominion, as he reunites with Jurassic Park co-stars Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern. Ahead of the film’s release in June, the actor is reminiscing about his role in Steven Spielberg’s classic.

Specifically, the star addressed a slight inconsistency in Grant’s accent. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Neill admitted that his change in accent in the film was actually due to changing instructions from the film’s director, Steven Spielberg.

On the first day of filming, the scene in which young Tim Murphy gets electrocuted, Neill went with the American accent he had prepared for rehearsals. However, he explained that Spielberg was not so convinced.

“He came up to me in the middle of the day and was like, ‘Hey, Sam, do you know what accent we’re talking about?’ He said, “Yeah, I’ve been working on it for four weeks.” He said, “Don’t worry, use your own voice.” I said, “That’s great Steven, thank you so much.”

However, that was not the end of the conversation. Spielberg then approached him four days later with another request. Neill continues: “He came up to me and said, ‘Do you know the voice you’re using right now?’ mentioned. “Yes, my voice? I said. “Somewhere in between,” he said. “It’s an actor’s nightmare!

The actor later said that was the reason he received so much flak about the accent to date. However, Dr. Ellie Sattler star Laura Dern couldn’t help but point out Neill’s generosity in her choice of accents. She told him, “You give the fans everything they want. A little you, a little American. Well said, Dern. Well said.
