Scarlet Witch Almost Made MCU Debut In First Doctor Strange

Scarlet Witch almost debuted in Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in 2016. After having been featured in a number of MCU team-up films, Wanda Maximoff finally got time the spotlight by being the star of 2021’s Disney+ series WandaVision. The show ended up being important for laying the groundwork for the newly released Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where Wanda takes on a major role.

Since the introduction of Doctor Strange into the MCU, one thing many fans hoped for was to see the Sorcerer either team up with or battle Wanda, the MCU’s other major magic-user. The release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally sees Wanda Maximoff and Doctor Strange in a film together, although instead of cooperating, the movie finds them on opposite sides, as Wanda is the film’s primary villain. The movie has generated a large amount of discussion about the handling of Wanda’s character, with star Elizabeth Olsen even commenting on the brutality of her character and defending Doctor Strange 2‘s version of Scarlet Witch.

Speaking to Bionic Buzz, via The Direct, Kevin Feige reveals that Marvel Studios at one point considered including Scarlet Witch in the first Doctor Strange movie. He reveals that, during the early planning of the MCU films, the idea was that Scarlet Witch would be introduced somewhere in the Doctor Strange franchise. Feige says he’s grateful they introduced Wanda in Avengers: Age of Ultron instead, and loves how they finally got the two characters together:

At one point, one of the initial ideas we had for Doctor Strange was to introduce Scarlet Witch in the Doctor Strange movie because those two characters were always two we really wanted to see together and sort of fit in that same world. Obviously, we ended up introducing her in [Avengers: Age of Ultron], and thank god we did, because we got to do all the other things with her. But this is really something that has been in the works for a very long time, and finally, here we are.

Doctor Strange was in development at Marvel Studios since the early days – the studio began working on a script in 2010, and in January 2013, Feige confirmed the character would be introduced in MCU Phase 3. In May 2013, director Joss Whedon dropped the first hint that Scarlet Witch would appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and that appears when the character was taken out of the Doctor Strange plans. Marvel likely wanted to introduce the character in Doctor Strange early on as a way to explain the character’s powers, as at the time they did not have access to the X-Men film rights, which were owned by Fox.

Putting Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron first, after being teased in the after-credits scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, had Marvel rework the character’s origin as a result of a HYDRA experiment. Then, in WandaVision, it was retconned that the experiment only enhanced the magical abilities she was born with. This showcases the interesting development cycle and how despite all the talk about Marvel Studios’ plans, executives are always reworking ideas for what is best with each given project. Eventually, though, Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange did get to co-star in a film, though only time will tell if fans embrace Wanda’s appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
