Sega Didn’t Make A Dreamcast Mini Because It Was Too Expensive

According to Okunari, Sega had considered the Dreamcast Mini and Saturn Mini, but there are hardware issues preventing the systems from launching. There is an ongoing semiconductor shortage, in part due to the pandemic, which has resulted in a number of shortages in video game console production. The Nintendo Switch suffered from low stock in 2021, but the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have been hit even harder by the shortages. The existing hardware of the Mega Drive Mini isn’t strong enough to run Sega Saturn or Dreamcast games, and better hardware is more difficult to come by, due to the semiconductor shortage. As such, the Mega Drive Mini 2 was developed, as the current hardware is strong enough to run Mega-CD games.

It’s a shame that the Dreamcast Mini and Saturn Mini are currently off the table, but that doesn’t mean that they will be impossible forever. Sega might be able to develop the necessary hardware in the future, once the semiconductor shortage starts to wind down. It’s also possible that the company will make more of an effort to port its older games to modern systems, as there is a proven interest. The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack has Genesis games, and Nintendo might be able to convince Sega to port more games to the Expansion Pack, in order to make the service more attractive to potential subscribers.
