Skyrim Mods That Make Playable Races Better

Ethereal Elven Overhaul by nuska on the Skyrim Nexus is an aesthetic revamp of all Elven races in Skyrim. One of the main complaints leveled at the fifth Elder Scrolls entry’s Elves is how they look, with many fans commenting on the physical difference between the races seen in previous Elder Scrolls games. Skyrim‘s Elves appear different and have been accused of looking old, with harsh angular features and odd facial ridges.

Ethereal Elven Overhaul softens the features of the Elves, making them more pleasing to look at while remaining lore-friendly. Players who wish to download this can choose whether or not they want their Elves to have the brow ridges. It is worth noting that this mod will also alter the appearance of every Elf NPC in Skyrim as well as player characters.

Khajiit Speak Changes The Dialogue Of Skyrim’s Cat Race

Khajiit in the Elder Scrolls universe have very unique speech patterns, and those encountered in Skyrim are no different. So it is a little disappointing and disturbing to play as a Khajiit in Skyrim and have the Dragonborn’s dialogue read the same as a Breton, Redguard, or any other race. Khajiit Speak – Complete Dialogue Overhaul created by mjharper seeks to change that by altering the dialogue text to read more like Khajiit speaking patterns.

Khajiit Speaks by Matthew Harper manages to capture Khajiit speech patterns and their attitude perfectly. What might sound like a small mod actually changes quite a lot in-game and is a must for any fans who enjoy playing as Khajiit. This mod, available on the Skyrim Nexus, not only covers the vanilla Skyrim game but all its DLCs. Khajiit Speaks is also compatible with unofficial Skyrim patches and offers plugins for 18 other mods.

Skyrim’s Breastless Argonian Females Mod Makes Them More Accurate

One of the oddest things in Skyrim is the presence of breasts on Argonian females. As a reptilian race, it makes no sense for them to have human-like breasts, but luckily for Skyrim fans with Argonian characters, there is a mod to remove them. Breastless Argonian Females by Lightningo does exactly what it says and adds new breast-free meshes to Argonian females.

The Argonian females can still be easily identified as they have smaller frames than their larger male counterparts. Ultimately, whether a player wants Argonian females to have breasts depends on personal taste. However, for hardcore Argonian roleplayers, this mod is a lore and anatomically-friendly must-have and it is available on the Skyrim Nexus.

Best Skyrim Race Mods – Digitigrade Khajiit & Argonian Raptor Feet

Another aesthetic mod for the two playable beast races is artifex’s Digitigrade Khajiit and Argonian Raptor Feet, available on the Steam Workshop. An odd thing about Skyrim‘s races is that they all have the same body shape, which is understandable from a game design perspective. After all, every combo of armor in Skyrim needs to be able to be worn by every possible player character. However, it’s puzzling to see Khjaiit and Argonians wandering around with human-like feet from a lore perspective.

Digitigrade Khajiit and Argonian Raptor Feet give Khajiit unique, paw-like feet more in keeping with their feline appearance. At the same time, Argonians receive cool raptor-like feet with velociraptor-style claws. These two minor tweaks add a great deal of realism to Khajiit and Argonian characters.

Imperious – Races of Skyrim Mod Makes Each Race More Distinct

Imperious – Races of Skyrim by Enai Siaion is a massive mod that completely overhauls all of Skyrim’s races, making them much more distinctive and interesting. This mod, found on the Skyrim Nexus, gives each of the 10 races found in Skyrim new advantages, abilities, and powers, along with different stats that make sense for each race. Player characters and NPCs gain three new racial abilities, and players can embark on a quest to unlock their race’s unique racial power.

Imperious is a well-thought-out and well-balanced mod which breathes new life into Skyrim’s vanilla races. Each race’s Health, Magicka, Stamina, regeneration, and starting carry weight has been tweaked. The individual quest for each race has a condition that must be met before it will automatically begin. For example, Altmer must pluck 40 wings off butterflies while Nords must clear eight dungeons.

Aetherius – A Race Overhaul Changes The Skills Of Each Skyrim Race

Another race overhaul mod is the appropriately named Aetherius – A Race Overhaul by Simon Magus. Aetherius changes all starting skills, reducing their value from 15 to five while adding major and minor skills to each fictional Elder Scrolls race. This means that at the beginning of the game, a player’s choice of race will have much more of an impact on gameplay.

Rather than allowing greater powers, Aetherius introduces stronger passives. For example, vanilla Altmer have the ability called Highborn, which enables them to regenerate Magicka faster for 60 seconds, once a day. Aetherius’ Highborn gives players an extra 50 Magicka and 50% to Magicka regeneration.

This is a lightweight mod that adds a lot of gameplay options in a well-balanced way and can be downloaded from the Skyrim Nexus. While each race is designed to fill a specific role, these bonuses allow a wide variety of Skyrim player character builds to benefit from them. Aetherius even alters the unarmed damage races do with the beast races of Khajiit and Argonians dealing more damage per hit than the other races.

Mods add replay value to Skyrim, making a game over a decade old feel fresh. Which mod a player adds to their game is dependent on personal choice and can even be playthrough specific. However, these mods are a good starting point for any Skyrim player wishing to improve or even experiment with the vanilla playable races.
