Sonic Origins Art Leak on PSN Could Signal Upcoming Announcement

Key art for Sonic Origins was recently leaked on PlayStation Network, signaling that a launch date for the upcoming retro collection could be announced soon. SEGA announced two major Sonic The Hedgehog releases in honor of the Blue Blur’s 30th anniversary last year. The first was Sonic Frontiers, a brand-new 3D platformer that will see Sonic running through an open world, not unlike the ones found in recent games like The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and Kirby And The Forgotten Land. The second is Sonic Origins, a current-gen release of some of the hyper-fast hedgehog’s Genesis-era adventures.
Sonic Origins consists of 1991’s Sonic The Hedgehog, 1992’s Sonic The Hedgehog 2, 1994’s Sonic The Hedgehog 3, the concurrently developed Sonic And Knuckles, and 1993’s Sonic CD – as well as a variety of special content and bonus features. However, any particular details on what these might be have been scarce since Sonic Origins was initially announced last May. This silence was recently broken by a surprise leak from the Game Rating and Administration Committee Video Game Rating System board in South Korea, which classified the PC version of Sonic Origins earlier this week.                       
Another interesting clue pointing to Sonic Origins being released soon is a piece of key art that briefly appeared on PlayStation Network before being taken down. This Sonic Origins image was posted on the fan-based Sonic Stadium Twitter page (via The Gamer), featuring several classic Sonic The Hedgehog characters like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Metal Sonic, and Dr. Robotinik. While Sonic Origins being available on PlayStation consoles was largely assumed by fans, the artwork’s sudden appearance on PSN could be a sign that a release date is coming soon.

Sonic has had a very exciting past couple of years thanks to his 30th anniversary, with the recently released live-action Sonic The Hedgehog 2 blasting its way to high box-office numbers when it was released domestically last week. In addition, there have been several official Sonic crossover projects with Minecraft and Roblox, and even a Wordle clone that tasks players with identifying some of the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise’s most memorable songs from just a few seconds of music. Meanwhile, details about Sonic Frontiers continue to emerge, including how the game will bring back several longtime veterans of the Sonic franchise and include new combat styles for the Blue Blur as he battles Dr. Eggman’s latest ploy for world domination.             
All this Sonic The Hedgehog news probably has fans feeling nostalgic for some of the Blue Blur’s early side-scrolling adventures, making the wait for Sonic Origins all the more biting. There is still no official word on when this retro compilation will be released, but the recent international ratings and PSN’s leaked artwork could be signs that Sonic Origins could be racing onto current gaming platforms sometime before the year is out.
