Splitgate Season Two Preview: Upgraded Temporal Fun
One of the most engaging parts of Splitgate Season 2 is the three new modes included in the new season. Two new modes, Lockdown and Hot Zone, should excite fans of the King of the Hill game type. Hot Zone will require players to work together in a team of four against another team in a race to capture three points scattered around the map. However, Hot Zone is different from KotH because each objective is worth only one point after it is captured, rather than points earned per second while an objective is being held. This results in teams being able to reclaim an objective before an enemy team can score any points.
Lockdown operates similarly, but teams cannot earn a single point in this new mode unless they can simultaneously capture all three objectives. Both modes will require serious teamwork to thrive, unlike the other new Free-For-All game mode, which is Splitgate’s own version of Juggernaut. Seven of eight players will hunt down the faster and stronger Juggernaught, who can’t use portals in this new take on the classic cat and mouse-style multiplayer mode.
The Spligate developers have improved the game’s visuals since it first launched. The newly remastered version of fan-favorite level Abyss demonstrates how far the team has come. Drastic lighting improvements and less cluttered level design help the remastered level feel crisp and easier to navigate. Another map-related upgrade is coming to the game’s Map Maker mode. A new creator map environment is being included to help add even more variations to fans’ custom map creations which will be easier to share online and with friends. Custom Splitgate maps can now be shared and downloaded by using the map code, similar to how Super Mario Marker 2 players shared their creations.
With custom maps being easier to share, players will be able to try out new game modes or classic rounds of Team Deathmatch with countless new designs from Spligate creative fanbase. The latest update should please any players who haven’t played the game for a while with its updated and less cluttered UI, and improved multiplayer matchmaking. The developers have been hard at work in their journey to transform the game from its indie shooter roots to a serious AAA title that will be hard for shooter fans to ignore.
When asked what things the Splitgate team would like to bring to the game in its future, it was revealed that cross-progression is in the works. And although the team announced that there is nothing currently in development, they are incredibly interested in creating more Splitgate lore. It is now unknown if that means that fans could someday see lore injected into multiplayer modes or even a Splitgate single-player campaign filled with physics destroying action and space opera sci-fi. After experiencing the new content, it’s clear the developers are working hard to make playing Spligate a fun and rewarding experience. Fans should get excited to see what Splitgate has evolved into before it changes into something even more remarkable in the future.
Splitgate Beta Season 2 is free to play and available on PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
