Star Wars: Every Canon Lightsaber Stance, Ranked From Least To Most Used
It’s very rare that two variants of Form VII (the Ferocity Form) are ever taught, simply because of how dangerous they are. Juyo and Vaapad require the wielder to channel their emotions, which is why they were not approved by the Jedi Order and are more likely to be used by Sith (such as the great Emperor Palpatine).
Vaapad is most notably utilized by Master Mace Windu and it is even more disdained by the Jedi due to it utilizing the Dark Side and using it for good. It’s why Windu’s lightsaber might be purple: the hue between blue and red, a balance between light and dark.
7 Form II – Makashi
The Contention Form (also known as Makashi) is a less aggressive form for lightsaber wielders. It’s a more elegant stance that relies on defense and following up with swift and deadly strikes. Makashi proves to be the most effective with curved hilts (as shown with the underrated Star Wars villain: Count Dooku).
Count Dooku taught this form to all of his apprentices, including Asajj Ventress and Savage Opress. However, it is not a Sith exclusive form as Ki-Adi Mundi and Jedi Temple Guardians were practitioners of Makashi.
6 Form VI – Niman
The final lightsaber form to be accepted by the Jedi, Niman mixes lightsaber combat and Force-based attacks at the same time. Also known as the Moderation Form, Niman is also the stance best suited for double-bladed lightsabers (such as Darth Maul).
In recent years, the canon has presented more practitioners of this form. Cal Kestis of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and his master Jaro Tapal showed how a Jedi implements mixing lightsaber and Force attacks for defense and offense.
5 Form V – Shien/Djem So
Form V is more about defense, relying on blocking and deflecting attacks but having more emphasis on attacks. Form V, the Perseverance Form, is most effective against projectile attacks, such as blasters, and comes in two variants.
Shien is a bit more common and is the one that Darth Vader utilizes the most, as it allowed him to get more power behind his offensive attacks (and helped him to become one of the best duelists in the galaxy). Other Shien fighters include Plo Koon, Aayla Secura, and Luke Skywalker. Djem So is a bit different and uncommon with the practitioners wielding the lightsaber in a reverse grip. However, Anakin’s apprentice, Ahsoka Tano, mastered this variant.
4 Undesignated Form – Jar’Kai
Currently, Jar’Kai does not have a number as a form but it is still an effective maneuver that focuses on dual-wielding lightsabers in combat. It’s meant to overwhelm the opponent with a barrage of attacks in an attempt to stun them or deal the most damage possible.
Though he rarely uses it, Anakin Skywalker is adept at Jar’Kai and so was Anakin’s padawan, Ahsoka Tano. There have been several practitioners of Jar’Kai, including Aayla Secura, Asajj Ventress, Kanan Jarrus, Kylo Ren, and even Cal Kestis.
3 Form IV – Ataru
This form is nicknamed The Aggression Form and for good reason. Ataru is a stance that is used by the wielder to go purely offensive with, mixing powerful saber attacks with acrobatic maneuvers. This was Anakin Skywalker’s main form during the Clone Wars and is what made him such a difficult opponent for Obi-Wan Kenobi to defeat in Revenge Of The Sith.
Master Yoda was also adept in Ataru, a stark contrast from his usually calm and collected self. Other users included The Grand Inquisitor, Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Aayla Secura.
2 Form III – Soresu
Soresu combines the defensiveness of Makashi with the combat effectiveness of Shii Cho. It is a stance all about wearing down the opponent by blocking their attacks while also being able to provide tight and fast-based aggressive attacks. That is why it has earned the title of the Resilience Form.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is the most famous master of this form, utilizing it in many duels that helped turn him into one of the best Jedi. Kanan Jarrus was also adept in Soresu, using it when he defeated the Grand Inquisitor. Jedi Master Luminara Unduli implemented Soresu, proving to be an effective fighter during the Clone Wars.
1 Form I – Shii Cho
The most common lightsaber stance/form in the galaxy is Shii Cho, The Determination Form. It is not only one of the oldest forms but one of the most accessible, which is why it is often used when first training padawans.
It may be a simple form but that does not make it less effective in combat. Many Jedi practice and implement it from Obi-Wan Kenobi to Kit Fisto to Anakin Skywalker. Fisto was actually one of the most influential practitioners of Form I, having mastered it over the years.
