Existing in a void within the Macroverse is IT, Maturin’s natural enemy and one of the most mysterious creatures in King’s universe as its true form is still unknown, but it’s described as a mass of swirling, destructive orange lights known as the “deadlights”. IT arrived on Earth in a massive cataclysmic event and landed in North America, specifically in the area that would become Derry, Maine. Other notable locations in the mainstream universe/Prime Earth are Jerusalem’s Lot, Castle Rock, Haven, and the Shawshank State Prison, and IT is one of the creatures that links many of King’s works through references to it or subtle appearances. For example, in The Tommyknockers, Tommy sees “a clown with shiny silver dollars for eyes” while driving through Maine, there’s a “Pennywise Lives” graffiti in Dreamcatcher, and characters like IT’s Bev Marsh and Richie Tozier appear or are mentioned in other stories as well.
