The 10 best video game movies of all time
Organizing the list of the best video game movies gets harder and harder every year, as movie studios have finally realized that we want our favorite games to be faithful adaptations rather than ripping them off one after the other. Whatever your mood, here are the ten best video game movies to watch right now.
Whether they know Pikachu is a cute yellow creature or think it’s the latest variant of COVID, we’ve got something for everyone. We have blockbuster action, comedy, horror with spooky towns or hungry werewolves, and even vintage fighting competitions. We keep this list updated as new movies come out, Uncharted starring Tom Holland is the latest addition to this special hall of fame.
Our rules for the best video game movies are strict but fair. They should be based on a particular game and do justice to them, not just in a fictional game world like Free Guy or Ready Player One. Whichever one you like to play, there’s going to be a movie on this list that’s worth putting down the remote and picking up the popcorn instead. There is comedy, horror and bloody deaths. Enjoy!

Here it is: Best Video Game Movie: When we learned that Ryan Reynolds – Deadpool himself – would be voicing the little furry yellow man, we knew Detective Pikachu would do the Pokemon brand justice. The film centers on 21-year-old Tim Goodman, who only wants to find his missing private investigator father, Henry, and works with Pikachu in the process. Lots of CGI, lots of sentimental family stuff, and best of all, enough jokes to tickle a Snorlax.
Goosebumps director Rob Letterman is responsible for an eclectic cast that includes pop singer Rita Ora, Bill Nighy, Ken Watanabe and DJ Diplo, but what stands out most is the love and care brought to the Pokémon world in general.
