The Grand Inquisitor Looks Better: What Went Wrong In The Kenobi Teaser?

Has anything actually been altered in the Grand Inquisitor’s presentation? Did Lucasfilm clock the negative online reaction and immediately demand CGI tweaks? Although impossible to rule out completely, such drastic measures seem improbable. Compare the Grand Inquisitor’s cantina shot from Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s new trailer to the corresponding image from the March teaser, and there’s no discernible difference between them. The VFX team certainly haven’t added a few extra inches to Rupert Friend’s forehead, or anything so bold.
More likely, Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s first teaser simply showed the Grand Inquisitor from a bad angle. His two main appearances in that early promo were both close-ups focused squarely upon the Jedi hunter’s face. Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s new trailer backs off and shows Friend’s design in its full glory. Witnessing the entire ensemble in motion – rather than merely as a glaring face behind a spinning lightsaber – the live-action Grand Inquisitor makes far more sense, and perhaps didn’t merit such heavy early criticism.
Having said that, don’t expect the winds of opinion to change immediately. Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s Grand Inquisitor may photograph considerably better from some angles than others (don’t we all?), but his live-action appearance represents a significant departure from Star Wars Rebels nonetheless. Whether he’s striding down a ramp or intimidating some locals, Rupert Friend still doesn’t look particularly Pau’an-ish, and that lack of authenticity will rankle some of the Star Wars faithful. Thankfully, the villain should at least now avoid becoming a point of ridicule in Obi-Wan Kenobi. After those first images landed, the Grand Inquisitor seemed destined to become the butt of Star Wars jokes. The more Obi-Wan Kenobi reveals, however, the more public opinion comes around to that pasty, round noggin.
