The Simpsons: Hit & Run devs explain how they were influenced by GTA 3

The developers of The Simpsons: Hit & Run have opened up about how they were heavily influenced by Grand Theft Auto III and asked established Rockstar franchises for advice.

Simpsons: Hit & Run developers Christopher Mitchell, Steve Bocksa and Nigel Brooke spoke to Retro Gamer about the impact and thought process behind the game. Mitchell says, “Without GTA III, there would be no Simpsons: Hit & Run.” But instead of imitating Liberty City, Hit & Run brought the fantasy world of Springfield to life. The team started trying to replicate the areas shown in the demo and eventually built a citywide race track inspired by GTA III. However, a major issue during production was the driving AI; NPCs had difficulty navigating tight spaces, limiting how fast vehicles could go. Exciting speed is an important factor in GTA games, so after feedback from testers, the issue has been resolved.

One question raised by Radical Entertainment was the feel of the game: Will it be a “drive to do missions” game or a “get out of the car and do missions” game? When Mitchell joined the project, the goal was to make it a “get out of the car” game; this decision helped set it apart from other GTA games launched in the market. Instead of relying solely on the Simpsons brand to ensure success, it’s time. That’s not to say the series didn’t have a major impact on gameplay throughout its development – scripts would be sent to The Simpsons writers for review and approval. As a mega-fan of the show, Mitchell was “really happy” to work with the show’s writers and see his jokes featured in the final script.

Fans of The Simpsons: Hit & Run have been asking for a remake or remake for so long that one of them decided to remake it using Unreal Engine 5, which even got support from the game’s lead designer Joe McGinn .
