The Simpsons Ignored Its Perfect Succession Parody
While the episode didn’t retcon more Simpsons backstory, unlike the majority of season 33, the outing did spend most of its runtime introducing new characters clearly modeled on the Succession cast. Played by stars like Paul F Tompkins, Kristen Ritter, John Lithgow, and Seth Green, the Redfield family didn’t get much character development since there all of them were introduced in one twenty-minute episode, and the obvious idea of the Simpson family themselves parodying the characters of Succession was never addressed. While the Simpson family doesn’t have one-for-one equivalents in the Succession cast, Bart is easy to envision as the feckless Roman Roy and Lisa as the highly-strung, self-important Kendall.
However, The Simpsons didn’t take this approach, despite Family Guy’s earlier Succession parody spoofing the show by casting its own famous family as stand-ins for the Roy clan. Since The Simpsons season 33 already borrowed a South Park plot, the animated sitcom may have avoided imitating Family Guy’s approach for fear of being accused of plagiarism. However, by introducing a slew of new characters who are unlikely to appear again, The Simpsons wasted an opportunity for fans of both shows to see what the HBO hit would look like if Succession‘s story centered on Springfield’s most famous family. Despite the potential of using one satirical family-centric comedy to parody the other, The Simpsons evidently didn’t see the value in a Succession spoof that focused on its own dysfunctional family.
