The Walking Dead movies: Everything we know about Rick Grimes’ big-screen trilogy

The Walking Dead movies took years to get ready, but since their initial announcement, we’ve heard very little about the trilogy starring Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes.

But lately we’ve been plugging our ears and hearing some of the latest updates on The Walking Dead movies, including Lincoln’s words. In our guide, we also have the first trailer and how the main series potentially sets up the movies.

The Walking Dead movies still don’t have a release date

Later, Andrew Lincoln told sister publication SFX magazine in 2021 that he was “not filming at the moment”. Our latest big update includes Walking Dead veteran and special effects wizard Greg Nicotero revealing in an interview with ComicBook.com that things are still “alive” and moving.

“I wish I knew and I wish I could say [when it’s happening]. I have read various drafts of the scripts over the past few months. They really make sure they get it right,” Nicotero said.

So, no, the movies haven’t even started filming yet, but given how well-equipped AMC is for tight The Walking Dead returns, there’s a good chance they’ll reach a release date in 2023.

The Walking Dead movie trailer

The trailer for The Walking Dead movies, released at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, is a minimal exercise, offering nothing more than a title card, preliminary artwork, and the promise that Rick Grimes will return. However, this skyline seen in the background shouldn’t be considered just a stock photo, but could potentially give an idea of Rick’s whereabouts and the films main background.

Comparing them side by side, it’s clear that the skyline of Philadelphia, the largest city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, sits just north of the Virginia setting of The Walking Dead season 10. If such is the case, so maybe Rick Grimes isn’t as estranged from his family as we originally thought, so he’s got every chance of reuniting with Daryl, Judith and the others one day… these movies are in one piece .

The Walking Dead Movies Will Finally Reveal More About The Rick Grimes Mystery

The Walking Dead movies are already beginning to unfold in the main series and its spinoffs.

That at least explains why Rick still hasn’t returned to Alexandria, but we’re going to need more than that.

The World Beyond spin-off shed more potential light on Rick’s condition. Jadis explains that she turned Rick over to the Civilian Republic Army as a “B”, not an “A”. That means he’s definitely still alive, albeit in the shady clutches of the CRM.

Hopefully the main show will continue to reveal more about the whereabouts and condition of this cowboy killer as it goes on, but for now the mystery of the disappearance of Rick is left shrouded in a few unanswered questions…
