New horror movie from director Ti West X A great throwback for old school slashers. It takes place in an isolated cabin, contains mostly convicted teenagers, and includes many gruesome murders. Of course, a truly classic slasher also needs a sequel and Xalready on the way.
West explained how he shot in a recent Zoom interview with Polygon X and more, pearlback to back and how XThe stars are essential to ensure the success of both films. project X It all started with a single movie about a group of teenagers who rented a club in Texas and planned to shoot softcore porn. Before they can finish their movie, they find themselves chasing the strange old couple who own the property. while most X It’s played like a traditional slasher, with Mia Goth playing the dual role of porn star Maxine and old woman Pearl who kills every teenager she sees.

“The target is always [double cast], but I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off,” West told Polygon. “But it’s a tribute to Mia. When I met Mia, I said, ‘We can get through this. Also, WETA [Workshop] to make incredible prostheses. We had a top-notch artist and a top-notch effects company, so we were able to do that.

While everything seemed to fit together nicely, creating the sequel was more of an impulsive move for West.
X He had to be shot in New Zealand due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but at the time the country had a 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving from overseas. This two-week period gave West plenty of free time and new ideas, so he started working on the sequel.
“It’s a long time to sit in a room,” West said. “So I had an idea for a prequel. I thought I’d write it in those two weeks, and Mia and I kind of collaborated on FaceTime. ‘I think that’s a great idea. […] There’s a good chance we can make this movie, and it at least serves as a very detailed backdrop for Pearl.
West then pitched the idea to A24, XThe production studio on board, so West, Goth and the film crew X and pearl more or less at the same time. Of course, making a movie is hard enough, so shooting two movies in a row was an even bigger, but somewhat unexpected challenge for West.

“Really, not doing two movies was like editing both, which was the biggest challenge,” West said. “Because you’ve come to the end Xand you were enjoying the glory of being almost done, of coming back to zero. pearl It was like, psychologically, you know, it was quite difficult.
West was reluctant to reveal more details on the matter. pearlbut he lamented that he would finish the film in the near future and hoped the film would be released next year. While X includes pieces of the character’s backstory, pearl will show us exactly what happened to the character in the mid-20th century to turn her into an octogenarian killer.
