Weird Al Reacts to Stranger Things Season 4’s Joke About Him
Weird Al Yankovic reacts to a joke about him in Stranger Things season 4. The kids from Hawkins are back for a new adventure in the latest season of Netflix’s hugely popular sci-fi series. Which of course means the 1980s references are once again coming in fast and heavy.
Stranger Things 4 indeed moves the action a few years ahead to 1986, a fact that is reflected in the show’s fashion, hair styling and pop culture references. But of course there are some ‘80s artifacts that remain evergreen on Stranger Things, like Dungeons & Dragons, which continues to hold a central place in the lives of Dustin and Mike even though they’re now in high school. And another big ‘80s figure who continues to be relevant in the world of Stranger Things is Weird Al, the beloved parodist who owned the decade with goofy hits like “Eat It” and “Fat.” Stranger Things’ Dustin indeed is a particular fan of Yankovic, and was seen in season 3 sporting a Weird Al t-shirt – a fact that was not lost on the real Weird Al, who began selling the shirts on his website in response to the shout out.

Now in season 4 Weird Al and Stranger Things have again crossed paths, and Weird Al has again taken note. In one scene, Dustin and Mike’s metalhead Dungeons & Dragons pal Eddie Munson chats with them at lunch, and recalls the first time he ever saw Dustin, who at the time was wearing his Weird Al t-shirt – a fashion choice Eddie refers to as “brave.” See the scene along with Weird Al’s Twitter response in the space below:

Dustin and Mike’s scene partner Eddie Munson is of course a new character in Stranger Things 4, but he makes a huge impression right out of the gate as the leader of the D&D-playing Hellfire Club (whose shirts Dustin and Mike can be seen sporting in the shot). A guitar player himself, Eddie’s musical tastes of course run more toward the heavy metal side of things, and the character indeed represents a great chance to send up the whole ‘80s metalhead persona while goofing on the very ‘80s idea of a high school student who appears to be at least 20. But of course there’s more to Eddie than just his musical preferences and headbanger persona, a fact that becomes evident in Stranger Things 4’s first episode.
Given his headbanger look and the very ‘80s guitar seen hanging in his room, Eddie is probably not a fan of Weird Al Yankovic. But clearly he can appreciate a bold fashion choice, and it was indeed a bold choice for a high school kid to wear a Weird Al t-shirt back in the ‘80s. Nowadays of course Weird Al is considered a beloved pop culture figure and there could be nothing more retro-cool than wearing his t-shirt. The fact that Stranger Things continues shouting out Weird Al, and that the jokes about him continue landing for a generation that wasn’t even born in 1986, only demonstrates the enduring appeal of the accordian-playing song parody master.
